Mohammad Abdur Rashid is a Bangladeshi academic and vice-chancellor of the Islamic Arabic University. [1] [2] He is a member of the Sharia advisory board of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission.

Rashid is a professor of the Department of Islamic studies at the University of Dhaka. [3]

Early life

Rashid did his bachelor's degree and masters in Islamic Studies at the University of Dhaka in 1988 and 1989 respectively. [4] He completed his PhD at the University of Dhaka in 2002. [4]

Career

Rashid joined Abudharr Ghifari College as a lecturer on 6 November 1995. [4] He joined the University of Dhaka as a lecturer on 1 October 1997. He was promoted to assistant professor on 7 November 2000. [4] He was promoted to associate professor on 21 May 2003. [4]

Rashid was promoted to professor on 5 September 2006. [4]

From 18 February 2014 to 17 February 2017, Rashid was the head of the Department of Islamic Studies at the University of Dhaka. [4] He was a member of the Bangladesh Madrasah Education Board. [4] On 31 December 2019, he was appointed the chairman of the Governing Committee of Nilkhet High School. [4] He is a member of the Shariah Supervisory Committee of the United Commercial Bank PLC. [5]

Rashid was appointed to the Sharia advisory board of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission. [6] On 1 June 2020, Rashid was appointed provost of Kabi Jashim Uddin Hall of the University of Dhaka. [4] In April 2023, he was appointed the vice-chancellor of the Islamic Arabic University. [7] He replaced Mohammad Ahsan Ullah, whose term was investigated by the Ministry of Education and the University Grants Commission over irregularities in recruitment. [8] In July, he was appointed director of Dr. Serajul Haque Centre for Islamic Research. [4] In November 2023, he was re-elected president of the Department of Islamic Studies Alumni Association. [9]

On 24 January 2024, Rashid was appointed convenor of a committee to investigate a story about a transgender woman in a high school textbook of the national curriculum. [10] [11]

Khandakar Abdur Rashid, better known as Abdur Rashid Tarkabagish was a Bangladeshi politician and Islamic scholar. His career spans from the anti-colonial independence movement to the establishment of both Pakistan and Bangladesh. Tarkabagish was the second president of the All Pakistan Awami Muslim League, and served as a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan and later the Parliament of Bangladesh. Despite being a member of the treasury bench, he opposed what he considered to be the repressive mentality of the Nurul Amin government towards the Bengali Language Movement.

Islamic University, Bangladesh ; commonly referred to as Islamic University, Kushtia shortly IU, is a public PhD granting research university in Kushtia, Bangladesh and the largest seat of higher education in the south-west part of the country. Abdul Latif Chowdhury, widely known as Saheb Qiblah Fultali, was a late-twentieth century Bangladeshi Islamic scholar, mufassir, qāriʾ, poet and orator. As a prolific author, he completed several works in Arabic, Bengali and Urdu including Muntakhab as-Siyār and Anwar as-Sālikīn. His books are part of syllabic studies under the Bangladesh Madrasah Education Board. Fultali was the leading figure of the Islamic Arabic University movement and the demand for fazil and kamil qualifications to be recognised as bachelor's and master's degrees. He is the founder of several influential organisations and institutions in Bangladesh and the United Kingdom such as Anjumane Al Islah, Hazrat Shahjalal Darussunnah Yaqubia Kamil Madrasa and Madrasah-e-Darul Qirat Majidiah.

A Sharia Board certifies Islamic financial products as being Sharia-compliant. Because compliance with Sharia law is the underlying reason for the existence of Islamic finance, Islamic banks should establish a Sharia Supervisory Board (SSB) to advise them on whether their products comply, and to ensure that their operations and activities comply with Sharia principles. There are also national Sharia boards in many Muslim majority countries that regulate Islamic financial institutions nationwide.

Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Mālik ibn Shams al-Ḥaqq ibn ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān ibn Ummīd ʿAlī al-Kumillāʾī, or simply Muhammad Abdul Malek, is a Bangladeshi Islamic scholar, author and researcher. His magnum opus, Al Madkhal ila Ulum al Hadith al Sharif, is used as a textbook in the Muslim world. Aziz Mohammad Bhai is a Bangladeshi industrialist and a former film producer. He is currently the chairman of Olympic Industries Limited.

Jubilee Banks is one of the oldest commercial banks in Bangladesh. It is a non-scheduled bank, one of five in Bangladesh. The others are Ansar-VDP Unnayan Bank, Grameen Bank, Karmasangsthan Bank, and Palli Sanchay Bank. It is scheduled for liquidation in 2022.

He is the former Advisor of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, Chancellor of Al Jamia Al Islamia Patiya, Secretary General of Anjuman-e-Ittihadul Madaris Bangladesh, Chairman of the Shariah Supervisory Committee of Shahjalal Islami Bank Limited, President of Organization of Islamic Conference Bangladesh and Organization of Tahfizul Quran Bangladesh, Editor-in-chief of Monthly At-Tawhid. In 2018, he was nominated as a member of the Standing Committee of Al-Haiatul Ulya Lil-Jamiatil Qawmia Bangladesh.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Abdur Rahman Kashgari</span>

Abū az-Zibriqān ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd al-Hādī Dāmullā al-Kāshgharī an-Nadwī, or simply Abdur Rahman Kashgari, was one of the leading scholars of the Arabic language and literature in the Indian subcontinent. Of Uyghur background, Kashgari migrated from East Turkestan to India at an early age, completing his studies in Lucknow where he became an accomplished Islamic scholar, linguist, poet and author. He then migrated to Bengal, where he eventually became the principal of Dhaka Alia Madrasa. Kashgari was also the first khatib of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, holding this role until his death.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Abubakar Muhammad Zakaria</span> Bangladeshi Islamic scholar

Abubakar Muhammad Zakaria Mojumder is a Bangladeshi Salafi Islamic scholar, media personality, professor, writer, preacher and Islamic speaker. He is currently serving as a professor in the Department of Fiqh and Legal Studies at Islamic University Kushtia. He has been discussing Islamic programs and Islam in various newspapers and magazines on various Bangladeshi television channels, including NTV, Peace TV and so on. He also giving sermons at various Islamic mahfils and pre-Jumu'ah prayers Khutba at various places. His "Tafsir Zakaria" has been published by King Fahad Printing Press, the official publication of Saudi Arabia, which is appreciated by the Muslim readers of Bengal. His two Arabic books, Hindusiat wa Tasur and Shirk fil Kadim wal Hadith are very popular in the Arab world. Besides, his books are also in curriculum in public higher studies of Bangladesh.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Abu Nasr Waheed</span> Bangladeshi Islamic scholar (1878–1953)

Abū Naṣr Muḥammad Waḥīd, or simply Abu Nasr Waheed, was a Bangladeshi Islamic scholar, educationist, author and politician. He is best known for his reformations to Islamic education in Bengal, and development of Arabic language education among Bengali Muslims. Wahid also served as the Education Minister of British Assam and a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly.

Siddiqur Rahman Miah is a retired Justice of the High Court Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court and former President of Dhaka Stock Exchange. He is the chairman of the AB Bank's Shariah Supervisory Committee. He is a director of Dhaka Stock Exchange.

Abdur Rab is a Bangladeshi academic and vice-chancellor of the International University of Business Agriculture and Technology. He was a Professor and Director at the Institute of Business Administration at the University of Dhaka.
