Mona Lisa Yuchengco is a Filipino-American community activist, publisher and filmmaker. She was born in Manila, Philippines and moved to San Francisco in 1982 with her two sons. Yuchengco graduated from Assumption College with degrees in Liberal Arts and Education and earned a master's degree in Business Administration from Ateneo University.

In 1992 Yuchengco founded Filipinas , a magazine specifically directed toward the Filipino American community. The magazine, in its prime, covered various topics such as the lack of compensation of Filipino Veterans in World War II, domestic violence and Filipino identity. [1] Yuchengco sold Filipinas in 2005 and it dropped its print version in 2010, existing solely online thereafter. In late 2012 Yuchengco started a new magazine, Positively Filipino , that was solely available on the internet. In 2014 Positively Filipino writers took six Plaridel Awards, boosting the magazine's status. [2] [3]

Filmmaking career

In 2012, Yuchengco produced and directed "Marilou Diaz-Abaya: Filmmaker on a Voyage". The film is a feature documentary film about Marilou Diaz-Abaya, Yuchengco's sister-in-law, who is considered one of the 20th Century's most renowned Filipino film directors. [4] "Filmmaker on a Voyage" screened at the Center for Asian American Media's CAAMFest in 2013. [5] Yuchengco also co-produced the multi-award-winning Right Footed, a feature documentary profile of Filipino-American pilot and disability activist Jessica Cox that was directed by Nick T. Spark. In addition to its long festival run, the film screened in 2016 as part of a fundraiser for Philippine International Aid. [6]

Community service and awards

Yuchengco has been involved in various charities and organizations relating to Asian American interests. In 1986 she founded Philippine International Aid, which she chairs. [7] [8] Among other awards, she was awarded the President's citation by Philippine President Gloria Arroyo December 12, 2002, for her contributions to the Filipino community in the United States. [1]

Personal life

Yuchengco is married to Lloyd LaCuesta and has two sons and several grandchildren. [9] She is the daughter of Alfonso Yuchengco. [10]

She was the founder and president of the Marilou Diaz-Abaya Film Institute and Arts Center, a film school based in Antipolo, Philippines. She was the director of the 1998 film José Rizal, a biographical film on the Philippines' national hero. She was part of the Second Golden Age of Philippine Cinema.

Mark A. Meily is a film director, producer and a film educator who started his career in the Philippines. He has directed campaigns for Procter & Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive, Coca-Cola, DocuSign, and FICO. His feature films have been presented at the film festivals of Deauville, Hawaii, Seattle, Goteborg, Marrakech, Montreal, Busan, Fukuoka and Brussels. He was the chair of the Filmmaking program of the De La Salle-College St. Benilde in Manila. He became the Dean of the School of Design of iAcademy until 2019. In May 2019, his tenth feature, Maledicto, the first film produced by Fox International in the Philippines opened in cinemas. He now lives in San Francisco.

Assumption College San Lorenzo Private Philippine school for girls

Assumption College San Lorenzo, formerly known as the Assumption Convent, is a private, Roman Catholic basic and higher education institution exclusively for girls run by the Religious of the Assumption in San Lorenzo Village, Makati, Philippines. It was established by the Assumption Sisters in 1958. Assumption San Lorenzo is the successor of the closed school named Assumption Convent which was located along Herran Street, Ermita, Manila. It provides education from pre-school, elementary, secondary, tertiary, to graduate level. The alumnae and present students of this school include daughters and granddaughters of Presidents, industrialists, politicians, actors/actresses and prominent figures in the Philippines.

Charito Solis Filipina veteran film and television actress

Rosario Violeta Solís Hernández, better known as Charito Solís, was a FAMAS and Gawad Urian Award-winning Filipina film actress, in addition to being the first Philippine woman who have bared her chest in recorded film.

Rodolfo R. Lana Jr., known professionally as Jun Robles Lana, is a Filipino filmmaker. The winner of 11 Palanca Awards for Literature, he became the youngest member of the Palanca Hall of Fame in 2006. In 2015, he directed the multi-awarded film "Shadow Behind The Moon" which won the Best Director, NETPAC and FIPRESCI awards at the 13th Pacific Meridian Film Festival. At the 20th International Film Festival of Kerala, he won the Best Director award for the same film.

Filipinas was a monthly magazine that catered to the Filipino American community. The magazine's inception was in 1992 and it became a nationally-distributed magazine that served Filipinos in the United States. It covered many aspects of the Filipino diaspora, particularly on Philippine heroes, leaders and achievers, culture, history, travel, food and entertainment. It provided a calendar of Filipino events in the coming months.

<i>Ikaw ang Pag-ibig</i> 2011 Filipino film

Ikaw ang Pag-ibig is a 2011 religious family-drama film written and directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya and released by Star Cinema with the Archdiocese of Caceres and Marilou Diaz-Abaya Film Institute and Arts Center. It commemorates the tercentenary of the devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia, the patroness of the Bicol Region in the Philippines. It is the last film directed by Diaz-Abaya before she died in 2012. The film was released on September 14, 2011.

Elizabeth Oropesa, also known as La Oropesa, or "Boots" to friends is a Filipina actress. She was a Grand Slam Best Actress winner for Bulaklak Ng Maynila (1999). She was crowned as Miss Luzon of the Miss Republic of the Philippines (RP) 1972. She was one of the Miss White Castle models in the mid-70s. Aside from showbiz assignments and commitments, Oropesa is currently working as a healer.

<i>Of the Flesh</i> 1983 film

Of the Flesh is a 1983 Philippine drama film directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya. It was adapted and written by Ricky Lee from the legal story "To Take a Life" by Teresa Añover Rodriguez and produced by Benjamin G. Yalung. It sets in the 1930s during the American colonial era and it tells the story of a newly-wed couple Narcing and Puring arrived from Manila in the town of Mulawin, a place where it was filled with violent and tragic pasts and it has been similarized to Hell by the Storyteller, played by Charito Solis. As they arrive, they will witness all of the misfortunes and violent actions as it tackles rape, incest, parricide, and tyranny that has been tainted in the town's heart by the cruel man Gusting.

Positively Filipino got its start when Mona Lisa Yuchengco, the founder of Filipinas magazine, decided to try another publishing venture after selling Filipinas. She joined with a number of former writers and editors from Filipinas, which she sold in 2005. This venture was designed to be an online venture, since print magazines had been declining in popularity for years.

Dan Villegas is a Filipino cinematographer and director. He won the 2014 Metro Manila Film Festival Best Director award for his film English Only, Please. He graduated from Ateneo de Manila University. He also took up film courses at the Marilou Diaz Abaya Film Institute and Berlinale Talents in Europe.

<i>Milagros</i> (film) 1997 film

Milagros is a 1997 Philippine drama film directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya. The film stars Sharmaine Arnaiz as the title role. The film won 10 out of 15 awards in the 21st Gawad Urian Awards, including Best Film. It was selected as the Philippine entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 70th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.

<i>Moral</i> (1982 film) 1982 film directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya

Moral is a 1982 Filipino coming-of-age drama film directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya and written by Ricky Lee. It is the second in a loose trilogy of feminist films by Diaz-Abaya and Lee which discusses women's issues, along with Brutal (1980) and Karnal (1983). Set in contemporary times in the Philippines, the film stars Lorna Tolentino, Gina Alajar, Sandy Andolong and Anna Marin as a group of friends and follows the course of their lives over the course of several years after they graduate from college. A "loosely structured, observational drama", the film discusses several topics that Diaz-Abaya and Lee saw as taboo at the time, such as abortion, rape, and gender inequality in the context of the changing morals of the time. This is Seven Star Productions' last feature film.
