The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is a public land-grant research university in Paradise, Nevada, United States. The 332-acre (134 ha) campus is about 1.6 mi (2.6 km) east of the Las Vegas Strip. It was formerly part of the University of Nevada from 1957 to 1969. It includes the Shadow Lane Campus, just east of the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, which houses both School of Medicine and School of Dental Medicine. UNLV's law school, the William S. Boyd School of Law, is the only law school in the state.

A provost is a senior academic administrator. At many institutions of higher education, the provost is the chief academic officer, a role that may be combined with being deputy to the chief executive officer. In some institutions, they may be the chief executive officer of a university, of a branch campus of a university, or of a college within a university.
Academic administration is a branch of university or college employees responsible for the maintenance and supervision of the institution and separate from the faculty or academics, although some personnel may have joint responsibilities. Some type of separate administrative structure exists at almost all academic institutions. Fewer institutions are governed by employees who are also involved in academic or scholarly work. Many senior administrators are academics who have advanced degrees and no longer teach or conduct research.
Carol Clancey Harter was an American academic administrator who was the 7th president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) (1995–2006). She is the longest-serving president in UNLV history, at 11 years. From New York, she held B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from Binghamton University as well as three honorary doctorates. She was succeeded as president of UNLV by David B. Ashley on July 1, 2006. Prior to her tenure at UNLV, Harter was the 11th president of SUNY Geneseo, where she was succeeded by Christopher Dahl. She served as a faculty member and in two vice presidential roles at Ohio University and is the author of numerous articles and co-author of two books. Harter was the retired Executive Director and founder of UNLV's Black Mountain Institute at UNLV. She was Chair of the Beverly Rogers, Carol C. Harter Black Mountain Institute Advisory Board and a member of the Guinn Center for Public Priorities Board of Directors.
David Brian Ashley was the eighth president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He was appointed to the position on July 1, 2006 and relieved of his duties by the Board of Regents on July 10, 2009.
Neal Joseph Smatresk, is an American academic research biologist, physiologist, and university president, who served as president of the University of North Texas from 2014 to 2024. Smatresk had previously served as president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, a role he held from 2009 to 2014.

Kim E. Schatzel is an American academic administrator who is the 19th president of the University of Louisville. She joined Eastern Michigan University in January 2012 as provost and executive vice president of academic and student affairs, and became interim president on July 8, 2015, following the resignation of Susan Martin. Schatzel was previously dean of the college of business at University of Michigan–Dearborn. On November 30, 2022, she was announced as the next president of University of Louisville and began her tenure on February 1, 2023.

Keith Eric Whitfield is an American psychologist, educator and gerontologist that currently serves as the President of University of Nevada-Las Vegas. He became the 11th and first black president of the university when he was appointed on August 24, 2020. Prior to the position, he was the Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and a professor of psychology at Wayne State University. Whitfield has also served various leadership positions at Pennsylvania State University and Harvard University, as well as positions within the American Council on Education, Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, and Association of Public and Land-grant Universities.
Barbara Atkinson is an American former educator, medical doctor, and university administrator. From 2014 until 2019, she helped create the UNLV School of Medicine. Prior to time at UNLV, she was the executive vice chancellor for the University of Kansas Medical Center for 10 years, and the executive dean for the University of Kansas School of Medicine for 12 years. Prior to moving to Kansas, Atkinson worked in Pennsylvania.
