Manjulika Chakma (born 26 October 1944) [1] is a Bangladeshi crafts and weaving entrepreneur. She was awarded Begum Rokeya Padak in 2020 for her contribution to the socio-economic development. [2]

Background and career

Chakma was born on 26 October 1944 to Kali Ratan Khisha and Panchalata Khisha. [1] She has 3 sisters and 3 brothers. [1] She learnt weaving in her childhood from her mother. [3]

In 1961, Chakma joined Shah Boys High School as a lecturer. [3] She purchased two traditional looms in 1965 and started applying new weaving techniques. [3] She founded Bain Textile, which has outlets in Rangamati, Cox's Bazar and Dhaka. [3]

As a Director-General, Family Planning Association of Bangladesh, with Haiti's Foundation for Reproductive Health and Family Education (FOSREF) has won the 2006's United Nations Population Award. Akhter received the award for her outstanding contribution to raising awareness on family planning and population issues.
