It was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1992. This is their first album to feature drummer Matt Sorum, who replaced Steven Adler following Adler's departure in 1990, as well as keyboardist Dizzy Reed. This is their first album to be recorded as a six-piece band.

The track "John the Revelator" contains a sample of Blind Willie Johnson's song of the same name. "The Moon and I" was initially released as a VaiTunes digital only single in 2010. However, due to the personal nature of the song, Vai decided to remix it and include it on the album. The album debuted on Billboard 200 at No. 78.
