More than a Vote is a nonprofit organization fighting for African-Americans's voting rights, [1] as well as advocating criminal justice reform in the United States. [2] [3] It was founded in June 2020, amid the Black Lives Matter protests following the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, by NBA basketball player LeBron James and other black athletes and entertainers. [4] [5] [6] More Than a Vote works with non-partisan VoteRiders to spread state-specific information on voter ID requirements. [7]
In August, 2024, WNBA nine-time All-Star, Nneka Ogwumike, took over leadership of the organization, refocusing its attention to reproductive rights for the 2024 election cycle. Ogwumike is joined by a coalition of WNBA. players including, Brittney Griner, Breanna Stewart, A'ja Wilson, Cameron Brink, Chelsea Gray, Naz Hillmon, Jewell Loyd, Jordin Canada, and Allisha Gray, who will help to educate the public on threats to women's reproductive rights. Through resources and media exposure, one of its main focuses is assisting citizens who want to secure their voter ID, and it often collaborates with other organizations in these efforts.
ChinenyeJoy "Chiney" Ogwumike is an American professional basketball player who last played for the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). In 2020, she became the first Black woman and the first WNBA player to host a national radio show for ESPN. She was one of the first and youngest commentators ever to be named an NBA analyst for the network covering the NBA, WNBA, and variety of sports, while simultaneously playing in the WNBA. Chiney is a graduate of Stanford University, where she majored in International relations. She played in three Final Fours and finished as the conference leader in scoring and rebounding as of January 3, 2014. As of 2016, Ogwumike was elected vice-president of the WNBA Players Association, and signed an endorsement deal with Adidas. In May 2018, Ogwumike signed a multi-year contract with ESPN to become a full-time basketball analyst.
