Moses Maladina

Moses Maladina (born 4 September 1959[ citation needed ]) is a former Deputy Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea. He is a qualified lawyer, agriculturalist and businessman with investments in PNG and various parts of the Asia Pacific region. He is also a published author which includes his fiction novel Tabu. His present residence is in Baiyer River, Western Highlands Province, in PNG where he has a coffee plantation.

Maladina was born in PNG, and apart from being educated in his country of birth he spent a number of years in his early childhood at boarding schools in Australia for his primary and high school education. For his tertiary education he attended the University of Papua New Guinea and the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. He also attended Vudal Agricultural College in Rabaul, PNG, where he graduated as a Tropical Agriculturalist.

As a Member of Parliament in PNG for a period of 10 years Maladina occupied senior Ministerial portfolios including being the Minister for Justice and Attorney General, Minister Agriculture, Minister for Public Service, Minister for Internal Security (Police) and Minister for National Planning. He was responsible for major policy and legislative reforms in agriculture (specially to the coffee industry), in the Public Service and the Judiciary. He successfully introduced legislation in Parliament to increase the number of judges in the National and Supreme Court, increased the retirement age of Judges and increased the jurisdiction of the District Court Magistrates. His amendments to the Constitution which were unanimously supported by both sides of the House related to changes regarding the powers of the Ombudsman Commission. These Constitutional amendments drew widespread criticism and protest amongst the general public who were of the view that the changes eroded the powers of the Ombudsman Commission. The Supreme Court subsequently declared these Constitutional amendments invalid.

Maladina was also the CEO and Managing Director of Air Niugini the National Airline and Flag Carrier of PNG. He introduced the first Dash 8 aircraft to PNG in 1997. Maladina has practised extensively as a Barrister and Solicitor in PNG, and as a Diplomat he served as PNG’s High Commissioner to New Zealand.

Maladina is currently the Chairman of PNG Power Ltd (Papua New Guinea’s main electricity company), and Chairman of Kumul Consolidated Holdings Ltd. He also holds directorship positions in various other companies in Papua New Guinea. [1] [2] [3]

Boka Kondra is a Papua New Guinea politician. He was a member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea from July 2007 until December 2016, representing the electorate of North Fly Open, variously as an independent, for the National Alliance and for the People's National Congress. He was Vice-Minister for Mining (2011-2012) and Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture (2012-2016) in the O'Neill government. Kondra was dismissed from office in December 2016 after a leadership tribunal found him guilty of misappropriation charges.

Sir Arnold Amet is a Papua New Guinean former politician and judge. He was a member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea from 2007 to 2012, representing the Madang Provincial seat. He was Minister for Justice and Attorney-General from 2010 to 2011. Prior to entering politics, he was Chief Justice of Papua New Guinea. In February 2021 he was nominated as the Allegiance Party candidate for the seat of Moresby North West District but was unsuccessful in securing the seat. He was awarded Knight Bachelor for service to the judiciary, law and justice in 1993.

Sir Salamo Injia is a retired Judge and former Chief Justice of Papua New Guinea. Injia was knighted in 2006 and appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Papua New Guinea in 2008, succeeding Mari Kapi. In 2018, Sir Gibbs Salika replaced him as the Chief Justice of Papua New Guinea. In August 2019, Injia was appointed chair of a commission of inquiry into a controversial state loan of US$1,200,000,000 from the Swiss bank UBS used by the PNG government to buy a stake in the resource company Oil Search.

Capital punishment is not a legal punishment in the Independent State of Papua New Guinea.

Peter Charles Paire O'Neill is a Papua New Guinean politician who served as the seventh Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea from 2011 to 2019. He has been a Member of Parliament for Ialibu-Pangia since 2002. He is a former cabinet minister and the former leader of the People's National Congress between 2006 and 2022. He resigned his position as prime minister to avoid a vote of no confidence and he was succeeded by James Marape. O'Neill won re-election to the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea in 2022 in the first round with a large majority, which is unusual in the country.

Belden Namah is a Papua New Guinean politician. Namah is a member of the National Parliament for the Papua New Guinea Party, and has represented Vanimo-Green River District since 2007. He served in the Cabinet from 2007 to 2010, and as Deputy Prime Minister from 2011 to 2012. In 2012, Namah became a member of the opposition. After retaining his seat in the 2022 election, he said that he would not rejoin the opposition.

2011–2012 Papua New Guinean constitutional crisis was a dispute between Sir Michael Somare and Peter O'Neill. Both claimed to be Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea.

General elections were held in Papua New Guinea from 23 June until around 13 July 2012, after being postponed by a further week to allow for security personnel to criss-cross the country, particularly the highland provinces. The elections followed controversy over incomplete electoral rolls and a constitutional crisis caused by a dispute over the office of prime minister between Michael Somare and Peter O'Neill.

Chronox Manek was the Chief Ombudsman of Papua New Guinea from 2008 until September 2012. He hailed from Wambangan village, Boana District, in the Morobe Province and joined the Ombudsman Commission on 3 July 2008. He retired from his position in September 2012 due to declining health.

The National Superannuation Fund (NASFUND) of Papua New Guinea (PNG) was established in May 2002, as the successor entity to the National Provident Fund (NPF). It is the largest private sector superannuation fund in PNG. In 2016, NASFUND reported net assets of PGK4.22 billion, representing a 28% growth on 2015.

Sir Gibuna Gibbs Salika is the current Chief Justice of Papua New Guinea. He is currently the longest serving judge of the National and Supreme Court of Papua New Guinea.

Francis Awesa is a Papua New Guinean politician. A former Premier of the Southern Highlands under the old provincial government system, he was a member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea from 2007 to 2017, representing the electorate of Imbonggu Open. A Papua New Guinea Party member in his first term, he subsequently switched to the People's National Congress after PNC leader Peter O'Neill became Prime Minister in 2011. He was Minister for Transport, Works and Civil Aviation (2011), Minister for Transport and Works (2011-2012) and Minister for Works and Implementation (2012-2017) in the government of Peter O'Neill.

Roy Biyama was a Papua New Guinean politician. He was a member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea from 2002 until his death, representing the electorate of Middle Fly Open. He was a member of four parties: the Papua New Guinea Revival Party, the People's Action Party, the United Resources Party and the People's National Congress. He served as Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (2003-2004), Minister for Labour and Industrial Relations (2004-2006) and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister (2006-2007) in the Somare government. He had also been Governor of Western Province since February 2017.

Tobias Thomas Kulang is a Papua New Guinean politician. He has been a member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea since August 2011, representing the electorate of Kundiawa-Gembogl Open in Chimbu Province for the PNG Constitutional Democratic Party (2011–2013), People's Progress Party (2013–2015) and People's National Congress (2015–2017). He was a prominent and outspoken member of the opposition before defecting to the government in November 2013; he served as Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture in the government of Peter O'Neill.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bryan Jared Kramer</span> Papua New Guinean politician

Bryan Jared Kramer was a Papua New Guinea politician and Member of the 10th and 11th Parliament of Papua New Guinea. Formerly a member of the Pangu Party, he founded the Allegiance Party, of which he was the sole MP, in 2018. He ran nine candidates in the 2022 National Elections, including one in each of Madang's seven electorates. Kramer was returned with a sizeable majority, but was unsuccessful in securing the election of another Party member. He was suspended from office on 30 September 2022 pending the outcomes of a leadership tribunal. On Tuesday 28 February 2023 the three-man bench unanimously found Kramer guilty of seven counts against him. A three-man bench recommended dismissal for two counts of "scandalising the judiciary" and fines totalling K10,000 (USD3,000) for five counts related to use of district funds. Kramer was dismissed from office by the Governor General on 24 May 2023. He will not be able to re-contest an election for three years, allowing him to compete in the 2027 election. A by-election for Madang Open will be held in 2023.
