Motema is the second most populous town in Kono District in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone. The town is located immediately outside Koidu Town, the largest city in Kono District. Motema has a population of 30,452 and lies about 270 miles east of Freetown.
The town is home to one of the largest police stations in Sierra Leone. The primary language of communication in the town is the Krio language.
The Town is home to many foreign diamonder employees as well as middle class Sierra Leonean diamond exporter.
The population of Motema is ethnically diverse, with no ethnic group forming the majority of the population. Islam account about 60% of the population and Christianity at about 40%. Religious violence in the city is extremely rare.

The current town chief is Sahr Bundor. Chief Bundor is from the Kono ethnic group. He was elected to the position after defeating the late Tamba James.
The prominent primary schools are the Ahmadiyya, Roman Catholic and United Methodist Church.
Like the rest of Sierra Leone, football is the most popular sport in the town of Motema. The town does not have a major football club; however, the Diamond Stars of Kono represent Motema and the rest of the Kono District in the Sierra Leone National Premier League, the top football league in the country.
In 1992 Diamond Stars FC of Kono created Sierra Leonean football history after becoming the first team from outside the capital Freetown to win the title.

The population of Koidu Town is 124,662 based on the 2015 Sierra Leone national census. Koidu Town is the fifth largest city in Sierra Leone by population, after Freetown, Kenema, Bo and Makeni. Koidu Town is a major urban, business, commercial and diamond trade center. Koidu Town lies approximately 280 miles east of Freetown, and about 60 miles north of Kenema.
Yengema is a town in Kono District in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone, lying approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) west of Koidu Town, and about 142 miles (229 km) east of Freetown. The major industries in and around Yengema are diamond mining and agriculture. The town is home to Yengema Airport, the main airfield serving Kono District. A 2012 estimate of Yengema population was 13,358 people.
Port Loko is the capital of Port Loko District and since 2017 the North West Province of Sierra Leone. The city had a population of 21,961 in the 2004 census and current estimate of 44,900. Port Loko lies approximately 36 miles north-east of Freetown. The area in and around Port Loko is a major bauxite mining and trade centre. The town lies on the main highway linking Freetown to Guinea's capital Conakry. It also lies on the over-land highway between Freetown and its major airport, Lungi International Airport, although most travellers complete this journey via the much shorter ferry or helicopter transit.

The Diamond Stars Football Club is a Sierra Leonean professional football club based in Koidu Town, Kono District, Sierra Leone. The club represent the diamond-rich Kono District and is a member of the Sierra Leone National Premier League, the top football league in Sierra Leone. The club is coached by a Class A Coach ZAPA.
Sidique Mansaray is a Sierra Leonean footballer, who currently plays as a striker for the East End Lions in Sierra Leone National Premier League. He is also a regular member of the Leone Stars, Sierra Leone national football team. in 2001, Mansaray scored the only goal as Sierra Leone defeated Nigeria 1-0 in a 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifying match in Freetown
The Kono people are a major Mande-speaking ethnic group in Sierra Leone at 5.2% of the country's total population. Their homeland is the diamond-rich Kono District in eastern Sierra Leone. The Kono are primarily diamond miners and farmers.

Ansarul Islamic Boys Secondary School also known as"A School," is a government sponsored public secondary school located in Tankoro Chiefdom, Koidutown, Kono District, Sierra Leone. The school was founded on Islamic Principle in 1974 by two illustrious Fula businessmen, Alhaji Sajalieu Bah, and Alhaji Chewtor Jalloh. The school is an affiliate of the Sierra Leone Ansarul Islamic Mission. The school's motto is "Service To Mankind." The school is the first and only boys secondary school in Koidutown. The school is regarded as one of the most prominent Secondary schools in the region. The school's alumni includes medical doctors, theologists, diplomats, politicians, paramount chief, military officers, lawyers, educators, athletes, and business entrepreneurs. Although the school has an Islamic tradition, students from all religious background are accepted, and the staff is made up of teachers from different religious background.
Sewafe is a diamond-mining town in Kono District in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone. The town is 30 miles west of Koidu Town and about 220 miles east of Freetown, on the highway linking Koidu Town to Kenema. Sewafe had an estimated population of 5,249 in 2009. The town has a government hospital and two police stations run by the Sierra Leone Police Force.
Sierra Leone is officially a secular state, although Islam and Christianity are the two main and dominant religions in the country. The constitution of Sierra Leone provides for freedom of religion and the Sierra Leone Government generally protects it. The Sierra Leone Government is constitutionally forbidden from establishing a state religion, though Muslim and Christian prayers are usually held in the country at the beginning of major political occasions, including presidential inauguration.
