Mother City SkyDiving - Cape Town is a sports skydiving drop zone licensed by the Parachute Association of South Africa (PASA) and the South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

Status

The drop zone provides a service for experienced sport skydivers, and offers Tandem Introductory Skydiving. [6] [7]

Operations

Operations are conducted in accordance with the PASA Manual of Procedures (MOPs) and part 105 of the South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Regulation, and as per terms and conditions laid down by Mother City SkyDiving. [8] [9]

Malmesbury Show

At part of the Malmesbury Show the team has taken a number of local celebrities on a tandem skydive as part of the main event. [10]

Interschools

In 2019 the team performed parachute displays into local Interschools Rugby competitions: Swartland vs Hugenote; Durbanville vs Stellenberg; and, what is regarded as the largest Interschools rugby competition in South Africa, Paarl Gimnasium vs Paarl Boys High. [15] [16]

Awards

In May 2020, Mother City SkyDiving's "Let's Jump out of a Plane" video submission for The International Tourism Film Festival Africa (ITFFA) won first place in the category Sport & Adventure Tourism. [17]

The ITFFA winning video was subsequently entered to the International Committee of Tourism Film Festivals (CIFFT) for international adjudication and screening. [18] [19] [20]

Records

In 2018 South African musician, DJ and Saxophonist George Sax became the highest and fastest saxophonist in the world [21] when he played his saxophone in freefall [22] to produce a music video for his 'Touch the Sun' track, featuring Si-Anne on vocals, at the drop zone. [23] [24] at Mother City SkyDiving.

Mother City SkyDiving is situated at Diepkloof Airfield, adjacent to the N7 Highway 70 km north of Cape Town and 12 km north of Malmesbury, in the Swartland Municipality of the Western Cape Province of South Africa.

Freeflying is a skydiving discipline which began in the late 1980s, involving freefalling in various vertical orientations, as opposed to the traditional "belly-to-earth" orientation. The discipline is known to have originated when Olav Zipser began experimenting with non-traditional forms of bodyflight. Zipser founded the FreeFly Clowns as a two-person competitive team with Mike Vail in 1992. He was joined by Omar Alhegelan, Charles Bryan, and Stefania Martinengo in 1994. The World Free Fall Convention (WFFC) was a skydiving event that was held annually from 1990 to 2006. From 1990 to 2001, it was held in Quincy, Illinois. From 2002 to 2006 it was held in Rantoul, Illinois. The event included various other categories of jump, such as sky surfing, raft jumping, and naked jumps. The WFFC also offered a wide variety of aircraft to jump from. The event was cancelled in 2007 and 2008 due to personal and logistic reasons. No conventions have been held since the cancellations.
