Mukti is a 1937 Indian Hindi and Bengali-language drama film, directed by Pramathesh Barua and produced by New Theatres.
An artist, Prasanta (Barua) is dedicated to his art. He pays little heed to gossip about him arising from the fact that he paints nude female forms. His conservative and rich father-in-law is unhappy with his cavalier attitude towards propriety. Prasanta, annoyed by his interference, aggravates him intentionally. Prasanta's rich young wife Chitra (Kanan Devi) loves him earnestly, but neither is willing to adjust to the other's lifestyle and behavior. Eventually, the marriage falls apart. Prasanta concedes to his wife's demand for a divorce and leaves for the jungles of Assam. There he meets the friendly Jharna (Menaka), the wife of an innkeeper named Pahari (P. Mullick/S.Nawab) and raises a wild elephant calf. He also makes a sworn enemy of a local trader (J.sethi/A. Mullick). Chitra marries a rich man named Bipul and they go on an elephant hunt. They end up killing Prasanta's pet elephant. Chitra believes Prasanta to be dead. To keep up the falsehood, Prasanta avoids meeting her. But he is forced to rescue her from the lecherous trader. Prasanta dies in the process leaving Chitra devastated. But both of them finally gain mukti (freedom) from their ill-fated love.

Pankaj Kumar Mullick was an Indian music composer, playback singer and actor, who was a pioneer of film music in Bengali cinema and Hindi cinema at the advent of playback singing, as well as an early exponent of Rabindra Sangeet.
New Theatres is an Indian film studio. It was formed in Calcutta by producer B. N. Sircar. It was formed on 10 February 1931. Motto of this company was– Jivatang Jyotiretu Chhayam. Sircar preferred to function roughly analogous to what in USA was known as an executive producer. He built a processing laboratory... and got around him a devoted band of people.... Having decided on or approved a story or a subject for a film and the team to make it [Sircar] ensured that adequate funds were provided... but refrained from interfering with its execution. He made New Theatres a symbol of Bengali cinema's artistic good taste and technical excellence.

Devdas is a 1935 Bengali film directed by Pramathesh Barua and based on the Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay novel, Devdas. It stars Barua himself as Devdas and Jamuna Barua as Parvati (Paro) and Chandrabati Devi as Chandramukhi. This was Barua's first of three language versions of the story, the second being in Hindi and the third in Assamese. The Bengali film was dubbed into Tamil and released in 1936. K. L. Kanan Devi was an Indian actress and singer. She was among the early singing stars of Indian cinema, and is credited popularly as the first star of Bengali cinema. Her singing style, usually in rapid tempo, was used instrumentally in some of the biggest hits of New Theatres, Kolkata.

Dhoop Chhaon or Bhagya Chakra is a 1935 Hindi movie directed by Nitin Bose. It was a remake of the Bengali film Bhagya Chakra. Dhoop Chhaon was the first Hindi film to use playback singing. It was Bose who came up with the idea of playback singing. He discussed with music director Raichand Boral and Bose's brother Mukul Bose, who was the sound recordist in New Theatres, implemented the idea.

He was awarded the Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 1970 and the third highest civilian award in India, the Padma Bhushan, in 1972.

Yahudi Ki Ladki is a 1933 Urdu/Hindi costume drama film directed by Premankur Atorthy. Produced by New Theatres Ltd.Calcutta, the cast included K. L. Saigal, Rattan Bai, Pahari Sanyal, Gul Hamid, Nawab and Kumar. The film was adapted from Agha Hashar Kashmiri’s play of the same name Yahudi Ki Ladki which had been written in Bengali as Misar Kumari. He also wrote the screenplay and lyrics. The film saw Pankaj Mullick's debut as a Hindi music director. The dialogues were by Wajahat Mirza. The story revolves around the rivalry and revenge between the Jewish merchant Prince Ezra and the Roman priest Brutus.

Abhagin is a 1938 Hindi film directed by Prafulla Roy for New Theatres Ltd., Calcutta. A bilingual, it was made in Bengali language as Abhigyan. The film was based on a story by Upendranath Ganguly, with dialogues by A. H. Shore. R. C. Boral provided the music composition with lyrics for the Hindi version by Munshi Arzu, and by Ajoy Bhattacharya for the Bengali. The screenplay was by Phani Majumdar for whom it was his first independent film as a scriptwriter. Bimal Roy, who was to make a name for himself as a prominent Bengali and Hindi director, was the cinematographer for the film. The cast included Molina Devi, Prithviraj Kapoor, Vijay Kumar, Nemo and Bikram Kapoor.
