The Munster Cricket Union is one of five provincial governing bodies for cricket in Ireland. Along with the Connacht, Northern, Leinster and North West unions, it makes up the Irish Cricket Union (now known as Cricket Ireland), the supreme governing body of Irish cricket. [1]

The Munster jurisdiction historically covered the traditional Irish provinces of Munster and Connacht in the Republic of Ireland, but since 2010 Connacht has had a separate union. The Union was founded in 1956. [2] In 2005, there were 21 clubs fielding 32 teams affiliated to the union. [3] It organises the Munster Senior League and Munster Senior Cup. In 2005, for the first time, a small league of five teams was organised in Connacht. [4]

In March 2018 Munster Cricket agreed a lucrative sponsorship deal with international cricket equipment retailer All Rounder Cricket. The financial support given will be invested in further development of cricket and specifically grassroots cricket within the Union.

Munster Cricket is made up of a number of affiliated sports clubs throughout the province of Munster engaged in the playing of cricket. Its role is to promote, foster and organise the playing of cricket in the province. There are currently 41 affiliated clubs participating in senior and youth competitions as well as through a network of T20 and social cricket. The number of clubs is increasing all the time with renewed interest in the sport in the fast growing areas around the hubs of Cork, Limerick, Waterford and Tralee.

The season runs from mid- April to mid- September with league and cup competitions organised for different groups. The main Adult Competitions are divided into three divisions, with each team also having the option to enter the Senior, Junior and Minor knockout cup competitions.

Because of the relative shortage of cricket grounds in Munster many of the clubs field a number of teams, so you will find a match going on in most clubs every weekend and youth and social matches throughout the week.

Schools matches are played mainly in the urban and suburban areas of Cork and Limerick during the short summer term from after Easter to the end of May. For the remainder of the summer the clubs organize teams for young players, boys and girls, from the Under 9 age group.

There is also a lot of social cricket between clubs, companies and loosely formed groups of enthusiastic cricketers. This provides opportunities not only for those that have retired from the more competitive leagues and cups but also for beginners who want to take up the sport for the first time or for those who perhaps haven’t played since school but want to get started again. It is a good way for people who have moved to the urban areas of Cork, Limerick, Tralee and Waterford to integrate and make friends. Some of the social clubs are very well organized and go on tour.

The MCU works closely with Cricket Ireland to continue to expand the gospel of cricket into new areas throughout the large catchment area that is Munster. The Union employs, with government support, a development officer who oversees the development of youth and schools cricket in the province. Munster Senior Cup and Division 1 winners also participate in the Irish Senior Cup while the remaining senior clubs compete in the National Cup.

Leinster Cricket Club

Leinster Cricket Club was founded in Rathgar in 1852. The Dublin sports club now hosts tennis, squash, table tennis, bowls and cricket. The Leinster Sports Club complex is situated in the Observatory Lane ground, in the heart of Rathmines. The cricket section currently has eight men's teams, three women's sides and fifteen youth sides.

Nenagh Ormond RFC is an Irish Rugby union club based in Nenagh, County Tipperary. It was founded in 1884 as The Ormond Cricket and Football Club. The club plays in Division 2A of the All-Ireland League and was County Tipperarys first ever senior grade rugby club. The club's main ground is New Ormond Park with another ground in Tyone where underage teams can train and play. The club fields 2 adult sides and 10 underage sides, from u7 to u20, that compete in blitzes with neighbouring clubs in Tipperary and Limerick as well as further afield at u7-u12 levels while from u13-20 level Nenagh competes in North Munster competitions and Munster competitions. The club also fields a Women's side and girl's underage sides. The club joined the senior ranks in 2005 when they won the round robin and spent their first ten seasons as a senior club in the bottom division of the All Ireland League. In the 2013/2014 season under the coaching team of Derek Corcoran and Trevor Hogan the club won Division 2B of the All Ireland League and retained the Munster Senior Plate which had been won for the first time in December 2012 with a win over Dolphin in Mahon, Cork. In 2014 Nenagh beat Young Munster by 74 points to 7 to win a third competition in the senior ranks.

Eoin Murphy is an Irish hurler who played as a right wing-back for the Waterford senior team.

The Munster Senior League is an association football league organised by the Munster Football Association. It currently organises seven divisions as well as various cup competitions. Its Senior Division is a third level division in the Republic of Ireland football league system. Munster Senior League teams also compete in the Munster Senior Cup, the FAI Cup, the FAI Intermediate Cup and the FAI Junior Cup. In recent seasons the winners of the Senior Division have qualified to play in the League of Ireland Cup. Despite using the Munster name in its title, the vast majority of its member clubs are based in County Cork. However, in the past it has included clubs from County Limerick, County Waterford, County Kerry and County Tipperary.

The Munster Football Association (MFA) is the governing body for association football in the Irish province of Munster. It is affiliated to the Football Association of Ireland and is responsible for organising the Munster Senior Cup and the Munster Senior League as well as numerous other leagues and cup competitions for junior teams. There are 13 leagues and approximately 800 teams affiliated with the MFA.

Nicholas "Nickie" Quaid is an Irish hurler who plays as a goalkeeper for club side Effin and at inter-county level with the Limerick senior hurling team.

The North West of Ireland Cricket Union, often referred to as the North West Cricket Union, is one of five provincial governing bodies in Ireland. Along with the Connacht, Leinster, Munster and Northern unions, it makes up the Irish Cricket Union, the supreme governing body of Irish cricket.

The North West Senior League is the provincial cricket league within the North West Cricket Union jurisdiction in Ireland, which covers counties Londonderry, Fermanagh, and part of Tyrone in Northern Ireland and County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland. The league has sixteen members and is divided into two sections of eight clubs, namely the Premiership and the Championship. There is promotion and relegation of one club between each division. It is sponsored by Long's Supervalu. Teams play each other twice per season, once at home and once away, each season, with two points awarded for a win and one for a tie or for “no result”.

The Leinster Senior League is the provincial cricket league within the Leinster jurisdiction in Ireland, which covers the province of Leinster in the Republic of Ireland. The league was formed in 1919, the nine founding members being Phoenix, Leinster, Pembroke, Dublin University, Railway Union, Civil Service, U.C.D., County Kildare and the Royal Hibernian Military School. The league is currently divided into fourteen divisions. It includes one member club from the Munster province: Cork County. It is sponsored by RSA.

2015 McGrath Cup

The 2015 McGrath Cup is a Gaelic football competition played by the teams of Munster GAA. The competition differs from the Munster Senior Football Championship as it also features further education colleges and the winning team does not progress to another tournament at All-Ireland level. On 24 January, Waterford won their second McGrath Cup after a nine-point win over UCC at Fraher Field in Dungarvan. In front of a crowd of 907, Joey Veale, Maurice O’Gorman and Gavin Nugent got the three goals in a 3-12 to 1-9 victory.

University College Cork Association Football Club is an Irish association football club based in Cork. It was founded in 1952 by students at University College Cork. Its senior men's team currently play in the Munster Senior League Senior Premier Division. They also regularly compete in the Collingwood, Crowley and Harding Cups, along with the FAI Intermediate Cup, and FAI Junior Cup. They have also played in the FAI Cup. UCC A.F.C. currently fields teams in the Munster Senior League, the Cork Athletic Union League, and the FAI College & Universities Football League

The 2019 All-Ireland Minor Football Championship was the GAA's premier inter-county Gaelic football competition for under seventeens. Thirty-two county teams from Ireland competed.
