Mustafa Alio is a Toronto-based activist, [1] writer, [2] [3] refugee, and the co-founder of the Jumpstart Refugee Talent program. [4] [5]

Life before immigrating

Alio worked for Syriatel, based in Latakia, Syria and moved to Canada in 2007. [3] [1]

In Canada

In Toronto, Alio studied marketing management and financial services, while also working at Naz's Falafel House. [3]

Upon graduation, he worked as financial adviser at a major bank in Toronto. [3]

In 2012, after receiving threats from people in Syria, Alio applied for permanent residency, but was rejected by Canadian immigration authorities. He subsequently requested and received political asylum. [3] [1]

In 2018 he was part of a group that signed an open letter calling for calm after Syrian refugee Ibrahim Ali was arrested and charged for the murder of Marrisa Shen. [5]

Alio was part of the Canadian delegation at the Global Refugee Forum in Geneva. [6] [1] According to Professor James Milner of the Local Engagement Refugee Research Network, "It's unprecedented to have a refugee sitting there as a national delegate." [1]

Alio co-founded the Jumpstart Refugee Talent program to help refugees integrate and get jobs in Canada [4] [1] and also co-founded Refugees Seeking Equal Access at The Table (R-SEAT). [7]

In 2021 he was the recipient of the Governor Generals Meritorious Service Decoration "For founding Jumpstart Refugee Talent to help newcomers enter the job market, become contributing citizens and start to rebuild their lives." [8]

The death of Sammy Yatim occurred early in the morning of July 27, 2013, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Yatim, an 18-year-old Toronto male armed with a switchblade knife, was shot at nine times, and was hit by eight of the shots fired by 30-year-old Toronto Police Service (TPS) officer James Forcillo. After being shot, while lying on the floor of the streetcar he was tasered. He later died from the injuries. The incident occurred after Yatim, brandishing a 12 cm (4.7 in) switchblade knife in a Toronto streetcar, advanced on a passenger, threatened other passengers, and exposed himself. The confrontation between Yatim and the police was recorded and footage of it was released publicly, prompting strong reactions across Canada.

Kevin Vuong is a Canadian politician serving as the member of Parliament (MP) for Spadina—Fort York since the 2021 federal election, sitting as an Independent. While Vuong was nominated as a Liberal Party candidate, the party disavowed him days before the election, following reports of an ongoing lawsuit against him as well as a dropped sexual assault charge from 2019, which he had failed to disclose during the party's internal vetting process. As nominations had already closed by that point, Vuong remained on the ballot as a Liberal and was elected.
