Mutschellen is the name of a pass in the canton of Aargau near the border of canton Zurich in Switzerland. [1] Three municipalities, Berikon, Widen, and Rudolfstetten-Friedlisberg, meet directly atop the pass.
The pass Mutschellen connects the Reuss valley in the west with communities of greater Zurich in the east. Due to its very low summit of 551 meters above sea level, Mutschellen is often called the lowest pass of Europe. [2] [3]
Directly on the mountain there are three municipalities: Berikon, Rudolfstetten-Friedlisberg and Widen. [3] [4] : 6 These three villages have grown together very closely; only those who know the place are able to say where the municipality borders are. Also considered to be part of the Mutschellen region are the municipalities of Zufikon to the west and Oberwil-Lieli to the southeast.
Mutschellen is actually a glacial moraine, which emerged during an ice age. At this time the Reuss glacier and the Linth glacier went northbound as far as the river Rhine. Even today one can see the traces of these monumental glaciers. The glaciers left huge furrows behind and during their retreat left lakes like the lake of Zurich. The pressure of the two glaciers also created the Mutschellen.
The Muschellen hosts an intersection of cantonal street K411 (Bellikonerstrasse/Bahnhofstrasse), running generally northwest–south, [5] and cantonal street K127, roughly east-southwest, formerly as National Road 1 a prime connection between Zurich and Bern, now primarily a connection for Dietikon and Bremgarten. [4] : 8, 9 [3] The pass is also crossed by the Bremgarten-Dietikon-Bahn, [3] a metre gauge light railway that is heavily used by commuters traveling into Zurich for work.
The top of the pass features a train station that connects to several bus routes, [4] : 9 connecting travelers with the route that runs over the top of the Mutschellen. The area is also a bustling commercial area with Coop and Migros supermarkets, a Denner store, as well as smaller independent stores.

The station is located on the standard gauge Rupperswil–Immensee line of Swiss Federal Railways, between Lenzburg and Rotkreuz. The Aargau Verkehr Bremgarten–Dietikon line, a 1,000 mm gauge line with some characteristics of a roadside tramway, terminates at a platform opposite the SBB platforms.
The Limmattal light rail line is a metre gauge tram line in the Limmat Valley between Zürich Altstetten and Killwangen which started service in 2022. The line is 13.4 kilometres long and serves 27 stops. It is served by the lines 20 and 2 of the Zürich tram network.
The Rupperswil–Immensee railway line is a railway line in the cantons of Aargau and Zug, in Switzerland. It runs 48.7 kilometres (30.3 mi) from Rupperswil to Immensee. The line runs north–south and interchanges with several other lines, including the Baden–Aarau, Heitersberg, Zofingen–Wettingen, Seetal, Brugg–Hendschiken, Bremgarten–Dietikon, Zug–Lucerne, and finally the Lucerne–Immensee and Gotthard at Immensee. The Aargau Southern Railway opened the line in stages between 1874 and 1882 and it has belonged to Swiss Federal Railways since 1902.
Andreas Alfred Glarner is a Swiss businessman and politician. He currently serves as a member of the National Council (Switzerland) for the Swiss People's Party (SVP), he was also a former member of the Grand Council of Aargau from 2001 to 2015. His archconservative politics can be allocated to the right-wing of his political party. He is primarily known for his immigration politics and the retention of independence, with a certain similarity to the politics of James Schwarzenbach.
