Myrthes Gomes de Campos (1875-1965) was the first female lawyer in Brazil. [1] [2] [3] She completed law school in 1898, and in 1906 she was admitted to the Instituto dos Advogados do Brasil (Institute of Brazilian Lawyers) and allowed to practice law. [4]

Brazilian diaspora

The Brazilian diaspora refers to the migration of Brazilians to other countries, a mostly recent phenomenon that has been driven mainly by economic recession and hyperinflation that afflicted Brazil in the 1980s and early 1990s, and since 2014, by the political and economic crisis that culminated in the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff in 2016 and the election of Jair Bolsonaro in 2018, in addition to chronic urban violence in Brazilian urban centers.

Domestic violence in Brazil involves any type of violence or abuse by intimate partners or family members against one another. The majority of domestic violence cases in Brazil are performed by the man against their female partners. In 2015, the government released a study that showed that every seven minutes a woman was a victim of domestic violence in Brazil, over 70% of the Brazilian female population will suffer some kind of violence throughout their lifetime and 1 in every 4 women reports being a victim of psychological or physical violence. In 2017, Brazil had an estimate of 606 cases of violence and 164 cases of rape per day, over 60 thousand cases throughout the year. It is also estimated that only 10% of the cases are registered to the police. Although Brazil acknowledged that domestic violence was a problem in the 1940s, the Government has only acted upon it from 1980s onwards, with the creation of the Women Police Stations and later in 2006, with the publication of the Domestic Violence law.

Brazil competed in 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada from July 10 to 26, 2015. The Brazilian Olympic Committee selected a team of 590 athletes, 314 men and 276 women. This is the 17th appearance of the country in the Pan American Games. The goal of the Brazilian Olympic Committee is to finish among top 3 countries on total medals, as part of preparations for the 2016 Summer Olympics, in Rio de Janeiro, and to surpass the number of medals of Guadalajara (141). Women’s field hockey, baseball, racquetball and speed skating competitions will be the only sports without Brazilian representation at these games.

Simone Nassar Tebet is a Brazilian lawyer, professor, writer, and politician. She has represented Mato Grosso do Sul in the Federal Senate since 2015. Previously, she was mayor of Três Lagoas from 2005 to 2010. She is a member of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party, of which she was the leader in the Senate from 2018 to 2019.

Damares Regina Alves is a Brazilian lawyer and evangelical pastor. She has been Minister of the Family, the Woman, and Human Rights during the Presidency of Jair Bolsonaro. She is the second female minister appointed to the new government as of December 2018. Damares defends the prohibition of abortion after rape and in risk pregnancies, women trafficking, suicide, the prohibition of juvenile self-harming and drug consumption such as, from her perspective, taking hormone blockers. Miss Grand Brazil is an annual female beauty pageant in Brazil, founded in 2014 by a São Paulo-based event organizer "Gerson Antonelli", to select the country's representatives to compete in its parent international contest, Miss Grand International. Since 2015, the pageant has been owned by Concurso Nacional de Beleza Miss Brasil, led by Henrique Fontes.
