Mark Evanier, Kirby's assistant on the Fourth World comics, has stated, "Jack based some of his characters on people in his life or in the news... the characterization between Scott 'Mister Miracle' Free and Barda was based largely—though with tongue in cheek—on the interplay between Kirby and his wife Roz." Uzeyir Mammadli is a youth activist and co-founder of N!DA Civic Movement. He is known for his arrest on March 30, 2013 a few days after the protests held in Baku against the non-combat deaths in the military. Mammadli is accused in preparing the riots during the protests. International human rights organization, Amnesty International recognized him as a prisoner of conscience. He was sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment on May 6, 2014, but later was pardoned and released on December 30, 2014 after 1 year 9 months imprisonment.

Anar Mammadli is a prominent human rights activist in Azerbaijan. Mammadli is active in observing and monitoring elections, and repeatedly criticized the conduct of elections by the authorities in Azerbaijan. On 16 December 2013, Mammadli was arrested and jailed, following outspoken criticism of presidential elections in October 2013. In spite of international protests, Mammadli was sentenced to more than 5 years in jail, in May 2014. On 29 September 2014, while still in detention, Mammadli was awarded the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which honours "outstanding" action in defence of human rights.
