Nalaka Gunawardene (born February 1966 in Colombo, Sri Lanka) trained as a science writer, he has worked as a journalist, broadcaster and development communicator since 1987. [1]

He initially worked as a science journalist in Sri Lanka's English language newspapers, and also freelanced for radio and television. After winning three national awards for outstanding science journalism, he moved on to the development sector, where he worked as an editorial consultant, journalist trainer and communication advisor.

In 1996, he co-founded TVE Asia Pacific, [2] a Colombo-based regional not-for-profit media foundation communicating sustainable development issues through TV, video and the web. As its Director since 2002, he has scripted, directed, produced or executive produced several dozen Asian and global documentaries, including Children of Tsunami: No More Tears (2005). In 2006, he called for media content on poverty and development to be recognised as a 'copyright free zone' to enhance their secondary use for public education purposes. [3]

He is the author/editor of several technical books related to science, technology and development, most recently Communicating Disasters: An Asia Pacific Resource Book [4] (TVEAP/UNDP, 2007). He was part of the British and South Asian team of researchers associated with the Media South Asia Project that studied the nature of the satellite television revolution which began in the early 1990s and transformed South Asian societies and cultures. He is especially known for his analytical writing on the impact of Information and communication technologies for development (ICTs) on developing Asian societies. From 2003 to 2008, he was Contributing Editor (Sri Lanka) of the bi-annual regional survey Digital Review of Asia Pacific , [7] and co-authored National Human Development Report – Promoting ICT for Human Development in Sri Lanka Report (UNDP, 2004). [8]

He is a regular speaker or panelist at international conferences on public communication of science and technology, development journalism, public interest broadcasting and ICT for development. He has been on juries at leading international documentary film festivals. Most recently, he was a juror for the International Digital Emmy Awards [9] 2011, presented in Cannes, France on 4 April 2011. [10]

Nalaka Gunawardene started writing a Sinhala language columns for the alternative newspaper Ravaya, a Sinhala language Sunday newspaper from February, 2011. Some selected stories were published as a book in August, 2012. A second book with 54 columns written in 2012-13 is being prepared for printing. The second book will be released in September, 2013.

He is on the Board of Directors of Panos South Asia, [11] and a Trustee of the Science and Development Network [12] in the UK.

He has worked on many projects funded by US Embassy in Colombo, [13] including Leaders in Environmental Advocacy Forum (LEAF).

V. K. Samaranayake Sri Lankan computer scientist (1939–2007)

Vidya Jyothi V. K. Samaranayake, MBCS, MCS(SL), FNASSL, MIEEE (Sinhala:වී.කේ.සමරනායක) pioneered computing & IT development industry and usage in Sri Lanka and thus considered as the "Father of Information Technology" in Sri Lanka. He was a Professor of Computer Science and former Dean of the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo. Prof Samaranayake played a major role in the development of IT and IT related education in Sri Lanka. He was at the time of his death the chairman of the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) of Sri Lanka and was the founding and former director of the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC).

Sinhala language software for computers have been present since the late 1980s but no standard character representation system was put in place which resulted in proprietary character representation systems and fonts. In the wake of this CINTEC introduced Sinhala within the UNICODE standard. ICTA concluded the work started by CINTEC for approving and standardizing Sinhala Unicode in Sri Lanka.

British Sri Lankans are a demographic construct that contains people who can trace their ancestry to Sri Lanka. It can refer to a variety of ethnicities and races, including Sinhalese, Tamils, Moors/Muslims and Burghers.

Champika Ranawaka Sri Lankan politician

Achchige Patali Champika Ranawaka is a Sri Lankan electrical engineer and a Far-right politician. He is the Member of Parliament from Colombo District of Samagi Jana Balawegaya. He was the Cabinet Minister of Megapolis and Western Development, as well as Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Power and Energy and Technology, Research and Atomic Energy.

Asoka Milinda Moragoda is a Sri Lankan politician and businessman. He is the current Sri Lankan High Commissioner Designate to India and, former Cabinet Minister and Member of Parliament representing the Colombo District from 2001 to 2010, who served as the Minister of Justice and Law Reform (2009-2010), Minister of Tourism (2007–2009); Minister for Economic Reform, Science and Technology and Deputy Minister for Plan Implementation and Development (2002–2004). His last political post was that of Opposition Leader of the Colombo Municipal Council and Senior Adviser to former President Mahinda Rajapakse.

Northern Province, Sri Lanka Province of Sri Lanka

The Northern Province is one of the nine provinces of Sri Lanka, the first level administrative division of the country. The provinces have existed since the 19th century but did not have any legal status until 1987 when the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka established provincial councils. Having served as the Director of Cyber Innovation Hub he recently retired from the Canterbury Christ Church University in the United Kingdom where he researched into security and forensic investigation of Internet of Things (IoT). Currently he is engaged in promoting IoT in digital agriculture as a disruptive technology, primarily in developing countries, leading to smart agriculture resulting in higher yields in food production. Induruwa is considered the father of Internet in Sri Lanka.

Tamara Manimekhalai Kunanayakam is a Sri Lankan diplomat. She was the former Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations Office at Geneva and Sri Lankan Ambassador to Holy See.

Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies Sri Lankan research institute

Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies (ACCIMT) is an institute for research and technology transfer in Sri Lanka. It is named after its founder patron, Sir Arthur C. Clarke, the famous British science fiction author, inventor and futurist. The institute is mainly focused on conducting research in the fields of electronics, micro-electronics, telecommunications, information technology, space technologies and robotics, and providing training for relevant industry professionals. It is one of the few institutions of this kind in Sri Lanka.

Nalaka Godahewa

Nalaka Godahewa, MP,, is a Sri Lankan politician, Cabinet Minister, and former corporate executive. He is currently serving as the Minister of Mass Media since the 18th of April 2022. In addition to this, he is a member of parliament for the Gampaha District. He had served as the Chairman, Securities Exchange Commission ; Chairman, Sri Lanka Tourism (2010–2012); and Managing Director, Sri Lanka Insurance (2006–2009).

International Conference on Advances in ICT for Emerging Regions (ICTer) is the successor to the seminal International Information Technology Conference (IITC) held in Sri Lanka since 1998. It provides a platform where research done in ICT is presented by both local and foreign Computer Scientists and IT Professionals. In order to get wider international participation and to promote computing research in the fast-emerging regions of the world especially in Asia-Pacific, it was decided to broadbase the IITC conference and link it with the related International Journal ICTer (www.icter.org).

Information Technology in Sri Lanka refers to business process outsourcing, knowledge process outsourcing, software development, IT Services, and IT education in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is always ranked among the top 50 outsourcing destinations by AT Kearney, and Colombo and ranked among "Top 20 Emerging Cities" by Global Services Magazine. The export revenue of this industry grew from USD 213 million in 2007 to USD 1089 million in 2019.

Dirty, Yellow, Darkness is a 2017 Sri Lankan psychological drama film written and directed by Kalpana Ariyawansha and Vindana Ariyawansha. Produced by Kalpana Ariyawansha, Prem Dissanayake, Athula Mahawalage, and Sujeewa Wijesinghe. The film stars Shyam Fernando, Samanalee Fonseka in lead roles along with Suranga Ranawaka, Buddhadasa Vithanarachchi and Sathis Wijemanne in supportive roles. It is the 1270th Sri Lankan film in the Sinhala cinema.

Seetha Arambepola is a Sri Lankan political surgeon and Member of the Parliament from National List. Currently She is the State Minister of Skills Development, Vocational Education, Research and Innovation.

Kokila Harshani Gunawardena is a Sri Lankan politician, former provincial councillor and Member of Parliament.
