Nancy Mayer is an American politician who most recently served as the state Treasurer of Rhode Island from 1993 to 1998. [1] She was the first Republican Treasurer of Rhode Island since Thomas P. Hazard in 1940 and the last Republican Treasurer of Rhode Island as of 2022. She has been credited with introducing and implementing a number of reforms,both in the Office of the General Treasurer and in the General Assembly. [2] In 1996,she ran for U.S. Senate after incumbent Claiborne Pell decided to retire. She won the Republican primary. [3] She lost the general election to Jack Reed. [4]

Since the Great Depression,Rhode Island politics have been dominated by the Rhode Island Democratic Party,and the state is considered part of the Democrats' "Blue Wall." Democrats have won all but four presidential elections since 1928,with the exceptions being 1952,1956,1972,and 1984. The Rhode Island Republican Party,although virtually non-existent in the Rhode Island General Assembly,has remained competitive in gubernatorial elections,having won one as recently as 2006.
