Nanette McGuinness is an American soprano and literary translator. She is also the co-founder of the Ensemble for These Times, and is a two-time silver medalist and 2018 gold medalist at the Global Music Awards.
Nanette McGuinness was born Nanette Michèle Cooper in Boston, Massachusetts. She spent much of her youth in Houston, before attending Cornell University where she earned a B.A. in music. She later graduated from Holy Names College, where she earned an M.M. in Vocal Performance and the University of California at Berkeley, where she earned her PhD in musicology. [1]
McGuinness began her music career as a soprano in both operatic and chamber music performances. [1] She has been featured on four albums released on Centaur Records, Fabulous Femmes (music by 19th and 20th century women composers) with the Athena Trio and Benedetto Vinaccesi: the Solo Cantatas with the Vinaccesi Ensemble. [2]
McGuinness is the vocalist for the trio Ensemble for These Times, alongside pianist Dale Tsang and cellist Anne Lerner-Wright. Formed in 2007 [3] Ensemble for These Times plays both works by living composers, including 56 out of 275 submitted via an international "Call for Scores" in 2016 and also relevant but forgotten works from the twentieth century, including composers exiled or killed in the Holocaust. [4] [5] In 2016 the group also released the album Jewish Music & Poetry Project: Surviving – Women's Words, [6] [3] based upon their performance project that set poems written by women survivors of the Holocaust to music. [1] The album was awarded a silver medal at the 2016 Global Music Awards. [7] Other members of the group have included composer David Garner and guest artists such as violinist Dawn Harms, [8] for their stage show The Guernica Project, [9] which commemorated the 80th anniversary of Pablo Picasso's work Guernica. [5] In 2018 McGuinness's album The Hungarians: from Rozsa to Justus [10] received the gold medal from the Global Music Awards. [11]
In 2019, the ensemble received the second place for Chamber Music Performance by The American Prize, [12] as well as being finalists for their Ernst Bacon Memorial Award. [13] In 2020 their album Once/Memory/Night: Paul Celan, in honor of Celan's centennial, was released and won a silver medal in the 2020 Global Music Awards. [14] Of the recording, The Whole Note wrote that, “The Ensemble’s performance is both poised and haunting, and is raised to a rarefied realm by lustrous and soaring, songful recitatives executed by the inimitable Nanette McGuinness.” [15] The journal Textura also stated that McGuinness “gives powerful voice to Celan's texts”. [16] McGuinness has also been named the Artistic Executive Director of the group. [17] In 2021, Ensemble for These Times won The American Prize Prize for Chamber Music Performance. [18]
McGuinness is also a translator, having translated about sixty published books and graphic novels from French, Italian, German, and Spanish into English for children [19] and adults, [20] including the Geronimo Stilton Graphic Novel series with Papercutz and California Dreamin': Cass Elliott Before the Mamas & the Papas with First Second Books, [21] [2] [22] Luisa: Now and Then, [23] A House Without Windows, [24] and For Justice: The Serge and Beate Klarsfeld Story. [25] Her translation of Luisa received the Stonewall Book Awards-Barbara Gittings Literature Award, [26] and was an honor book at the 2020 GLLI YA Book in Translation Awards. [27]
Annie Gosfield is a New-York-based composer who works on the boundaries between notated and improvised music, electronic and acoustic sounds, refined timbres and noise. She composes for others and performs with her own group, taking her music to festivals, factories, clubs, art spaces and concert halls. Much of her work combines acoustic instruments with electronic sounds, incorporating unusual sources such as satellite sounds, machine sounds, detuned or out-of-tune samples and industrial noises. Her work often contains improvisation and frequently uses extended techniques and/or altered musical instruments. She won a 2012 Berlin Prize.
Raymond Murray Schafer was a Canadian composer, writer, music educator, and environmentalist perhaps best known for his World Soundscape Project, concern for acoustic ecology, and his book The Tuning of the World (1977). He was the first recipient of the Jules Léger Prize in 1978.
Peter Ruzicka is a German composer and conductor of classical music. He was director of the Hamburg State Opera, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Hamburg and the Salzburg Festival. Ruzicka was managing director and Intendant of the Salzburg Easter Festival and is professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. The list of his compositions includes numerous orchestral and chamber music works as well as the opera "Celan", about the poet Paul Celan, which was premiered in Dresden in 2001. His opera "Hölderlin" had its premiere at the Berlin State Opera in 2008. Ruzicka's third opera "Benjamin", about the philosopher Walter Benjamin, was written in 2015/16 for the Hamburg State Opera and premiered in 2018.

Bernard Rands is a British-American contemporary classical music composer. He studied music and English literature at the University of Wales, Bangor, and composition with Pierre Boulez and Bruno Maderna in Darmstadt, Germany, and with Luigi Dallapiccola and Luciano Berio in Milan, Italy. He held residencies at Princeton University, the University of Illinois, and the University of York before emigrating to the United States in 1975; he became a U.S. citizen in 1983. In 1984, Rands's Canti del Sole, premiered by Paul Sperry, Zubin Mehta, and the New York Philharmonic, won the Pulitzer Prize for Music. He has since taught at the University of California, San Diego, the Juilliard School, Yale University, and Boston University. From 1988 to 2005 he taught at Harvard University, where he is Walter Bigelow Rosen Professor of Music Emeritus.

Ella Milch-Sheriff is an Israeli composer, winner of ACUM award for lifetime achievfment (2022). Born in Haifa, Israel, Milch-Sheriff began her career as a composer at the age of 12. During her military service she composed, performed and interpreted her own songs after which she returned to classical music studying composition under the direction of Professor Tzvi Avni and graduating in composition from the Rubin Academy of Music at Tel Aviv University.
Donald Steven is a Canadian-American composer, music educator, and academic administrator. An associate composer of the Canadian Music Centre, he won a BMI Student Composer Award in 1970, the Canadian Federation of University Women's Golden Jubilee Creative Arts Award in 1972, the 1987 Juno Award for Classical Composition of the Year and the 1991 Jules Léger Prize for New Chamber Music. His musical compositions are characterized by their emphasis on instrumental colour and atmosphere. Perhaps his most well known piece is his Illusions for solo cello, which has been widely performed in concert and on television and radio broadcasts.

His Zealot Canticles: An Oratorio for Tolerance was a winner of the 61st Annual Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance by the ensemble The Crossing. McLoskey serves as a Professor of Music at the Frost School of Music in Miami, Florida. Among McLoskey's numerous commissions are those from Guerilla Opera, Copland House, The Fromm Foundation, The Barlow Endowment, N.E.A., The Crossing, ensemberlino vocale, New Spectrum Foundation, Ensemble Berlin PianoPercussion, Passepartout Duo, the Boston Choral Ensemble, and Kammerkoret NOVA.
California Dreamin’: Cass Elliot Before The Mamas & the Papas is a graphic novel written and illustrated by Pénélope Bagieu which highlights the early years of late singer Cass Elliot. It was initially published in French during 2015 by Gallimard. The American edition was translated by Nanette McGuinness and published two years later by First Second Books. The subtitle was added to the American 2017 version. In 2018 it won the Harvey Award of Best European Book.
