Naqshineh Theatre

Last updated

Naqshineh Theatre is a group of Iranian performance artists who mostly work in the genre of Theatre of the Absurd.

The first show performed by Naqshineh was Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot , staged at the City Theatre of Tehran in 1998. After 30 shows they received an invitation to an international theatre festival in Nanterre (a suburb of Paris). The play was performed there in June 1999. In April 2000 the group performed Rhinoceros as their second play. After two months of negotiations with the Manager of City Theatre for the building of a separate theatre hall in the oil storage area of the building, the result was the opening of "Noh Hall" (with Rhinoceros as its premiere play) in August 2002. The third play staged by Naqshineh was The Unexpected Man by Yasmina Reza in December 2004. Eleutheria (also by Beckett) is the latest work of Naqshineh Theatre, and was performed in May 2005.

Waiting for Godot Play by Samuel Beckett

Waiting for Godot is a play by Samuel Beckett in which two characters, Vladimir (Didi) and Estragon (Gogo), engage in a variety of discussions and encounters while awaiting the titular Godot, who never arrives. Waiting for Godot is Beckett's translation of his own original French-language play, En attendant Godot, and is subtitled "a tragicomedy in two acts". The original French text was composed between 9 October 1948 and 29 January 1949. The premiere, directed by Roger Blin, was on 5 January 1953 at the Théâtre de Babylone, Paris. The English-language version premiered in London in 1955. In a poll conducted by the British Royal National Theatre in 1998/99, it was voted the "most significant English language play of the 20th century".

Eugène Ionesco Romanian-French playwright

Eugène Ionesco was a Romanian-French playwright who wrote mostly in French, and was one of the foremost figures of the French avant-garde theatre in the 20th century. Ionesco instigated a revolution in ideas and techniques of drama, beginning with his "anti play", The Bald Soprano which contributed to the beginnings of what is known as the Theatre of the Absurd, which includes a number of plays that, following the ideas of the philosopher Albert Camus, explore concepts of absurdism. He was made a member of the Académie française in 1970, and was awarded the 1970 Austrian State Prize for European Literature, and the 1973 Jerusalem Prize.

Theatre of the Absurd Theatrical genre

The Theatre of the Absurd is a post–World War II designation for particular plays of absurdist fiction written by a number of primarily European playwrights in the late 1950s. It is also a term for the style of theatre the plays represent. The plays focus largely on ideas of existentialism and express what happens when human existence lacks meaning or purpose and communication breaks down. The structure of the plays is typically a round shape, with the finishing point the same as the starting point. Logical construction and argument give way to irrational and illogical speech and to the ultimate conclusion—silence.

Eleutheria (play)

Eleutheria is a play by Samuel Beckett, written in French in 1947. It was his first completed dramatic endeavor. Roger Blin considered staging it in the early 1950s, but opted for Waiting for Godot, because its smaller cast size made it easier to stage. At this point, Beckett suppressed the manuscript. Beckett later recycled the name "Krap" for his play Krapp's Last Tape.

The notion of postdramatic theatre was established by German theatre researcher Hans-Thies Lehmann in his book Postdramatic Theatre, summarising a number of tendencies and stylistic traits occurring in avant-garde theatre since the end of the 1960s. The theatre which Lehmann calls postdramatic is not primarily focused on the drama in itself, but evolves a performative aesthetic in which the text of the performance is put in a special relation to the material situation of the performance and the stage. The post dramatic theatre attempts to mimic the unassembled and unorganized literature that a playwright sketches in the novel.
