Nation19 is a magazine that blends hip-hop culture, photojournalism, activism, and anthropology. The printed and digital magazine [1] [2] is produced and published by multimedia activists, visual anthropologists, and film directors Queen Muhammad Ali and Hakeem Khaaliq. [3] The magazine was started in the winter of 2010. [4] Nation19 also produces documentary films [5] [6] and hosts exhibits based on various of its articles. Nation19 is defined by its large photo spreads and motifs of indigenous empowerment, archeological research, and social change. Nation19 offers posters, [7] limited T-shirts, [8] and accessories for purchase in its online store. [9]

Contents

The hashtag initialism term "APDTA" [10] was coined by Nation19 and is an international trademarked brand sold by the company. [11]

Scope

Investigative journalism is a regular element of the magazine. A controversial interview with deceased CIA whistleblower and activist Michael Ruppert was published in the "Survival Edition" shortly after his death. [12] The piece focused on the Fukushima nuclear disaster and other issues related to the Pacific Ocean. [13]

In 2016 Nation19 magazine was invited to research the effects of Chinese culture on inner city youth.

Central America

In 2014 Nation19 magazine produced ¿Quiénes son los afro-mexicanos? for Univision Television. This two-part mini documentary was shot on location in Mexico's Afro-Mexican coastal communities by Nation19 magazine, and was narrated by Spanish news anchor Sergio Urquidi. Univision networks aired ¿Quiénes son los afro-mexicanos? internationally on July 14–15, 2014. [19]

Pacific Islands

A documentary film called The Last Matai, filmed in Samoa, American Samoa, and Hawaii, was produced by Nation19 magazine. [20]

South America

Nation19 traveled to Colombia, South America with Academy Award winner Rhymefest [21] [22] to direct a documentary film called #WarOnUs. [23] [24]

Archeology

Each printed and digital magazine features a spotlight on archaeological sites around the world relating to the number 19. Nation19 magazine #3 featured an article about the ruins of Göbekli Tepe, located in the southeastern Anatolia region of Turkey, spotlighting its 19 ft-tall, 20-ton, T-shaped pillars. [25]

In 2015 Nation19 printed a brief article explaining how the ancient people of Mexico predicted future solar and lunar events using a 19-month calendar.

Polyglot-ism

Every cover of Nation19 Magazine has "Nation19" written in Japanese characters ネイション 十九.

Most of the writers are bilingual and are experts in various cultures. For example, Jahsua Muhammad Ali works for Nation19 as a composer and transcriber/translator. He is fluent in Japanese. [26] Shahida Muhammad who is a frequent writer for Ebony magazine and Nation19 is fluent in Spanish and lives in Colombia South America. [27] Long time writer for Nation19, Joey Belk speaks Cantonese and lives in Hong Kong. Jobie Bakama speaks Swahili and lives in South Africa. Queen Muhammad Ali is proficient in conversational Mandarin, and can read Samoan.

In addition to writing and research many Nation19 / APDTA products display foreign characters. [28]

Exhibitions and events

Invisible Mexico: Encuentro Phoenix

Arizona's first anthropological augmented reality multimedia exhibit showcasing the isolated descendants of the African-Diaspora in Mexico through a collection of augmented photographs shot in Costa Chica, Veracruz, Palenque, Mexico City, Yanga, Huehuetán, revealing a side of Mexico most people are unaware of-depicting the people who reside on the country's rural Pacific & Gulf Coasts referred to as Afro-Mexicanos.

Artist: Award-winning husband & wife multimedia filmmaker / photographer team, Hakeem Khaaliq & Queen Muhammad Ali (Nation19). Opening night was hosted by Mayor Greg Stanton and curated by Mark Freedman of monOrchid Gallery Phoenix.

The project is supported in part by the Arizona Commission on the Arts which receives support from the State of Arizona and the National Endowment for the Arts, 100 Black Men of Phoenix and YoSoy™

Invisible Mexico photo exhibit (private)

From May 2 through June 14, 2014, @Univision Television Gallery Phoenix curated a private photo exhibit about the Afro Mexican township people of Costa Chica and Veracruz, displaying 10 27 1/2 x 39 1/4 framed prints from Nation19 magazine. [33]

On Friday, August 1, 2014, men's boutique and art gallery Division West in Denver's Cherry Creek North area held Nation19's UFO hip hop exhibit, which was free to the public. [34] [35]

Nation19 magazine presented Exhibit 19 with Dr. Runoko Rashidi: "Black and Indigenous contributions to the world." The presentation marked the first time Dr. Rashidi presented in Arizona. [36]

Afro-Mexicans Mexicans of predominantly African descent

Afro-Mexicans, also known as Black Mexicans, are Mexicans who have heritage from Sub-Saharan Africa and identify as such. As a single population, Afro-Mexicans include individuals descended from both free and enslaved black Africans who arrived to Mexico during the colonial era, as well as post-independence migrants. The latter include Afro-descended people from neighboring English, French, and Spanish-speaking countries of the Caribbean and Central America, descendants of enslaved Africans who escaped to Mexico from the Deep South during Slavery in the United States, and to a lesser extent recent migrants directly from Africa. Today, there are localized historic communities in Mexico with above-average, although not predominant, Sub-Saharan African ancestry. These are mostly concentrated in specific localities, notably the populations of the Costa Chica of Oaxaca and the Costa Chica of Guerrero where Sub-saharan admixture averages between 7% and 8%.

TUDN (pronounced tu-de-ene; formerly called Univision Deportes Network is an American Spanish language sports channel. Owned by Univision Communications, it is an extension of the company's sports division of the same name. It launched on April 7, 2012, along with Univision Tlnovelas and FOROtv.

Faiz Issa Khadoom Al-Rushaidi, commonly known as Faiz Al-Rushaidi, is an Omani footballer who plays for Mes Rafsanjan in the Persian Gulf Pro League.

Leslie Grace Dominican-American singer and songwriter

Leslie Grace Martínez is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. For her work as a singer she has received three Latin Grammy Award nominations. She starred as Nina Rosario in Jon M. Chu's film adaptation In the Heights (2021) and will portray Barbara Gordon / Batgirl in the upcoming Batgirl film on HBO Max, set in the DC Extended Universe.

Yosimar Reyes Mexican artist

Yosimar Reyes is a Mexican-born poet and activist. He is a queer undocumented immigrant who was born in Guerrero, Mexico and raised in East San Jose, California. Reyes has been described as "a voice that shines light on the issues affecting queer immigrants in the U.S. and throughout the world."

Alberto Ciurana was a Mexican television executive who worked as Chief Content & Distribution officer of TV Azteca. Previously, Ciurana served as President of Programming and Content for Univision Networks, where he oversaw programming for the entertainment broadcast and cable networks of Univision Communications Inc. Ciurana moved to Univision after working as VP of programming for Televisa for 15 years and was part of a steady expansion of Televisa influence at Univision that builds on the partnership struck among them in October 2010.

Hakeem Khaaliq is an American cinematographer, television producer, film director, photographer, multi-media activist, graphic design artist, and visual anthropologist. Before his career in film and television he worked as a music producer, music publisher, music supervisor and radio personality. In 1995 Khaaliq founded Radio Bums and in 2010 he co-founded Nation19 magazine / APDTA with longtime partner Queen Muhammad Ali.

The Lo Nuestro Award for New Artist of the Year is an honor presented annually by American network Univision. The Lo Nuestro Awards have been held since 1989 to recognize the most talented performers of Latin music. The nominees and winners were originally selected by a voting poll conducted among program directors of Spanish-language radio stations in the United States and also based on chart performance on Billboard Latin music charts, with the results tabulated and certified by the accounting firm Arthur Andersen. Starting from 2004, the winners are selected by the audience through an online survey. The trophy is shaped in the form of a treble clef.

<i>Bars4Justice</i> 2015 American film

Bars4Justice is a 2015 American short documentary film directed by Samoan filmmaker Queen Muhammad Ali and Hakeem Khaaliq. The film was recorded in Ferguson, Missouri during the first anniversary of the shooting of Michael Brown August 9–10, 2015. The film is an official selection of several international festivals including winning Best Short documentary at the 24th annual Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles, Glasgow Short Film Festival in Scotland, Tirana International Film Festival (DOCUTIFF) in Albania, and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in midtown Manhattan NY.

Queen Muhammad Ali is an American Samoan award-winning film director, photographer, graphic design artist, multimedia activist, lecturer, television producer, humanitarian, writer, visual anthropologist, the founder of Nation19 Magazine, and the Director of the Manuia Samoa, a social wellness hub in American Samoa. Ali is also the great-granddaughter of Paramount Chief Tuli Le'iato of American Samoa.

John Carlos Frey, is a six time Emmy Award winning Mexican-American freelance investigative journalist and documentary filmmaker and published author based in Los Angeles, California. His investigative work has been featured on programs and networks such as 60 Minutes, PBS, NBC News, CBS News, the Weather Channel, Dan Rather Reports, Fusion TV, Current TV, Univision, and Telemundo. John Carlos Frey has also written articles for the Los Angeles Times, the Huffington Post, Salon, Need to Know online, the Washington Monthly, and El Diario.

Jasiri X is a Pittsburgh-based rapper and activist who gained attention for his 2007 song "Free the Jena 6." He is a recipient of the Rauschenberg Artist as Activist award and co-founder of anti-violence group 1Hood. In 2016, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Chicago Theological Seminary.
