The petrified tree trunk is believed to be over 120 million years old, and is considered to be evidence for the presence of a sea during the Cretaceous period in this area. This fossil is of a conifer, measures around 18 meters long and a geological treasure. [1] Similar fossilized tree trunks have been found in nearby Varagur, Anaipadi, Alundalippur, and Saradamangalam, [5] all located within 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) of Sathanur.

Visiting

This national park is open to public throughout the year. Early visitors (1960s to 1980s) caused some damage by collecting samples for their research or in their college or university labs.[ citation needed ] Now it is well fenced and guarded.[ citation needed ]

This park is located approximately one kilometer north of Sathanur village. There used to be a sandy, muddy road and reaching the park used to be a very daunting task. [6]

The nearest airport is at Trichy, while the nearest railway station is at Ariyalur. Buses also run regularly from the new Perambalur bus-stand to the Sathanur bus stop. Visitors can then walk or take bicycle to reach the park.[ citation needed ]

Petrified wood, also known as petrified tree, is the name given to a special type of fossilized wood, the fossilized remains of terrestrial vegetation. Petrifaction is the result of a tree or tree-like plants having been replaced by stone via a mineralization process that often includes permineralization and replacement. The organic materials making up cell walls have been replicated with minerals. In some instances, the original structure of the stem tissue may be partially retained. Unlike other plant fossils, which are typically impressions or compressions, petrified wood is a three-dimensional representation of the original organic material.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Amkhoi Fossil Park</span>

Amkhoi Fossil Park is a fossil park located near Illambazar in the Birbhum District of West Bengal, India. It contains fossilized wood 15 to 20 million years of age and is officially recognized by the State Forest Department of West Bengal. In 2016 while digging a pond the villagers of Amkhoi village, near Ilambazar, found some large bone-like structures. Later it was established that the bone-like structures were actually wood fossils. Fossilized or petrified wood is often considered as semi-precious ‘stones’ and often used in jewellery — fetching a good market value. As the word spread it attracted fossil hunters from far and wide. To prevent the vandalism and theft of fossils the forest department decided to convert the area into a fossil park. In 2017 - 18 the park came into existence and was called Amkhoi Wood Fossil Park. The aim of the park was to create awareness about fossils among students and common people, and also try to help scholars in their research. It is the only fossil park of West Bengal state and has an area of 10 hectares. The fossils are laid out in a manicured lawn surrounded by pathways separated by hedge walls. Bilingual boards narrate the details of not only the fossils, but also about the process of fossilization.
