National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery is a hospital dedicated for burn and plastic surgery in Dhaka, Bangladesh. [1] [2] It is regarded as the largest burn and plastic surgical care center in the world. [3]

History

In 1986, the first burn unit was started in the country with six beds by country's first plastic surgeon Prof. Dr. Mohammad Shahidullah in Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The number of beds was increased to 50 in 2003 under supervision of Dr. Samanta Lal Sen. [4] Later, bed number was increased to 100.

In 2013, the number of beds was increased to 300.

In November 2015, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the project for establishment of the institute. On April 6, 2016, Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone for the institute. [5] [6] She also inaugurated the hospital on October 24, 2018. [7] [8] [9] It formally started functioning from July 4, 2019. [10] [11]

The Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery was renamed to National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in November 2024 after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina led Awami League government. [12] [13]

Hospital structure

The hospital building is a 18-storey structure equipped with rooftop helipad and a ground parking facility for 180 vehicles. It has three blocks for three separate units - Burn unit, Plastic surgery unit and academic wing. It was built at a cost of 912 crore bdt. [14] [15] The facility was constructed by Bangladesh Army's engineering core. [15]

Facilities

The institute has 500 bed, 22 ICU beds and 22 HDU facilities. It has 12 operation theatre with a postoperative unit. [14] [15]

Management

Prof. Dr. Abul Kalam has been appointed as the first director of the institute in March 2020. He was also the project director of this institute. [16] Until becoming a minister Dr. Samanta Lal Sen was the chief coordinator of the institute. [17] [18]

Role in outbreaks

Beside its regular activities, the hospital facility was used during Dengue outbreak in 2019 as an extension unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital to accommodate large number of dengue patients. [19] [20] In 2020, this hospital was used as COVID-19 treatment center in collaboration with Dhaka Medical College Hospital. [21]

The 2019 dengue outbreak in Bangladesh is a nationwide occurrence of dengue fever in Bangladesh that began primarily in April 2019 and is still ongoing. According to Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 14 people have died and 19,513 people have been affected as of 1 August 2019, majority of whom are children. Although other sources are reporting the death toll has already passed 50. On 1 August 2019, DGHS confirmed the outbreak affecting all districts of the country. Additionally, it reported 1,712 newly infected patients in the preceding 24 hours which is also the largest number of infected people on record in a single day. According to official source, roughly 71 more people are being infected in dengue fever every hour. Dhaka is the worst-hit city in the country and the districts in Dhaka Division are among the most affected regions. Experts feared that the situation would deteriorate as a lot of people traveled from major cities to rural areas to celebrate Eid al-Adha holidays in August. The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) expects the outbreak to continue till September 2019.
