The National Sailing Centre is located at the south-eastern tip of Singapore along the East Coast Park. It occupies 2.4 hectares of land. [1]
Opened in June 1999, the National Sailing Centre is approximately 51 minutes away from the Youth Olympic Village via the highway.
Equipped with a large berthing area for boats, it also comprises an administration block, a multi-purpose sports hall, a cafeteria, a dormitory and an auditorium, the Centre has been the first-choice location for regional and international competitions.
An ideal location for sailing competitions, the National Sailing Centre’s strategic position makes full use of the south-west and north-east winds for year-round sailing. Since its opening, the National Sailing Centre has hosted many international and regional events. These include the World Byte Championships (2003), the World Hobie Tiger (2005), the ASEAN Optimist Championship (2006), the Asia Pacific Laser Championships (2006), and the Asian Optimist Championships (2007). The National Sailing Centre will be used as a competition venue for sailing during the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics.

The Optimist, also known as the ‘opti’, 'oppie', 'opy' or 'bathtub' is a small, single-handed sailing dinghy intended for use by children up to the age of 15. Contemporary boats are usually made of fibreglass, although wooden boats are still built.
Sir Charles Benedict Ainslie CBE is a British competitive sailor. Ainslie is the most successful sailor in Olympic history. He won medals at five consecutive Olympics from 1996 onwards, including gold at the four consecutive Games held between 2000 and 2012.
The International 420 Dinghy is a sailing dinghy. The name refers to the boat length in centimeters, being 4.2 meters. The hull is fiberglass with internal buoyancy tanks. The 420 has a bermuda rig and an optional spinnaker and trapeze. It has a large sail-area-to-weight ratio, and is designed to plane easily. It can be rigged to be sailed single-handed or double-handed. The 420 is an International class recognized by the International Sailing Federation.

The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy is a centre for the sport of sailing on the Isle of Portland, Dorset, on the south coast of England. The academy building is located in Osprey Quay on the northern tip of the island, and the waters of Portland Harbour and Weymouth Bay, adjacent to the site, are the main areas used for sailing. Local, national and international sailing events have been held at the site since it was opened in 2000, and in 2005 WPNSA was selected to host the sailing events at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Redhouse Yacht Club (RYC), which is amongst the oldest yacht clubs in South Africa, hosts large dinghy races, and operates a training program that has produced international champion sailors.
The Singapore Sailing Federation, also known as SingaporeSailing, is the National Sports Association (NSA) responsible for the management and organisation of the sport of sailing in Singapore.
Robert Scheidt is a Brazilian sailor, who has won two gold medals, two silver medals and a bronze from five Olympic Games and a Star Sailors League Final. He is one of the most successful sailors at Olympic Games and one of the most successful Brazilian Olympic athletes, being one of only three to earn five medals along with fellow sailor Torben Grael., and the only sailor to win medals in both dinghy and keelboat classes.
