Nava Raj Subedi (born 1939 in Ramechhap District, Nepal) is a Nepali politician and former Chairperson (Speaker) of Rastriya Panchayat (Parliament) of Nepal. [1] [2]

Political career

He started active political life by being elected the first President of “Tribhuvan University Students Union” in 1960. He joined the party less Panchayat system since its inception, and elected continuously (from 1962-1990) as member of the parliament (Rastriya Panchayat) from Ramechhap district. Panchayat was a partyless political system incepted by King Mahendra by side-lining the Nepali Congress government of B. P. Koirala on 15 December 1960 AD. He introduced the partyless Panchayat system on January 5th, 1961 AD. Under his direct rule King Mahendra introduced the four-tiered structure—village, town, district and national Panchayat—on the basis of limited elected executive committee. Mahendra consolidated power by institutionalizing and invoking the three pillars of national identity—Hindu religion, Nepali language and Monarchy—as a foundation of everyday social and religious life.
