Gathsaurie Neelika Malavige is a Sri Lankan academic, university professor, researcher and scientist. She is the head as well as the professor at the Department of Immunology and Molecular Sciences of the Sri Jayawardenepura University, Faculty of Medical Sciences since 2020. [1] She is a visiting lecturer at University of Oxford since 2008. She is married to Lasantha Malavige who is regarded as Sri Lanka's first sexologist. [2]

Career

Neelika graduated with MBBS from the University of Colombo in 2000. She moved to UK and pursued her doctoral studies at the MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine at the University of Oxford where she obtained the Doctorate of Philosophy in 2008. [3] She pursued her doctor studies at the University of Oxford through a Commonwealth Scholarship scheme in 2004. After completing her higher studies in UK, she returned back to Sri Lanka and pursued her academic career as a visiting lecturer in 2008. [4]

She obtained the Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom (UK) in 2005. She was also elected as the Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom and also received the Fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Pathologists of the United Kingdom in 2015. [5]

She also serves as the director of Centre for Dengue Research at University of Sri Jayawardenepura University from 2012. [6] She served as a senior lecturer at the Department of Microbiology from 2008 to 2013. She also went onto serve as the head of Department of Microbiology on a three year stint from 2012 to 2015. She had also served as a professor in Department of Microbiology from 2013 to 2020. [4]

She has been a member in several prominent organisations such as British Society of Immunology, Sri Lanka College of Physicians, Sri Lanka Medical Association, European Academy of Alergology and Clinical Immunology, International Society of Infectious Diseases and American Society of Tropical and Hygiene. [4] She is also a key member of Oxford University research team conducting COVID-19 anti-body tests. [7] [8] In March 2020, she joined the executive committee of the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID). Prior to joining the executive committee, she served as the council member of ISID from 2012 up until 2020. [9]

She is also currently engaged in research regarding the COVID-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka giving updates and statements about the COVID situation in Sri Lanka from time to time. [10] [11] [12] She is also actively involved in identification and analysis of detecting new variants and strains of COVID-19. [13] [14] [15] In June 2021, she resigned from the independent vaccine advisory expert committee of the National Medicinal Regulatory Authority for personal reasons and workload. [16] [17] [18]

Awards

She claimed the Joseph Nalliah Arumugam Memorial Award at the final MBBS in 2000. In 2011, she received the prestigious S. C. Paul Oration and gold medal from Sri Lanka Medical Association. She also received the Third World Academy Science (TWAS) young scientist award in 2012. She also notably claimed the Zonta award for her remarkable achievements in the field of medicine in 2014. She was recognized as the best researcher at the University of Sri Jayawardenepura in 2015. [4] She received the Inspirational Woman Award for her research work on COVID-19 at the Top 50 Professional and Career Woman Awards in 2020. [19]

The Gypsies are a Sri Lankan baila band that performs Sinhala and English songs. The band was founded in the early 1970s and has since garnered a huge fan base across Sri Lanka and is one of Sri Lanka's most famous bands. They are a highly paid band in Sri Lanka, as they constantly perform at parties, dances and at many concerts.

The University of Sri Jayewardenepura is a public university in Sri Lanka. It is in Gangodawila, Nugegoda, near Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, the country's administrative capital. It was formed in 1958 from the Vidyodaya Pirivena, a Buddhist educational centre which was founded in 1873 by Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thera.

Rishad Bathiudeen is a Sri Lankan parliamentarian and former senior cabinet minister. He is the leader of the All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) Party, a registered political party in Sri Lanka. Bathiudeen was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Vanni Electoral District in December 2001 and was re-elected in April 2004, after which he was again re-elected in April 2010 and 2015 June from the same Electoral District which comprises Vavuniya, Mannar and Mullathivu Administrative Districts. Ranee Jayamaha also spelt as Rani Jayamaha is a Sri Lankan economist, author and banker. She served as the chairperson of Hatton National Bank from 2011 to 2015. In addition, she is currently an advisor to the President of Sri Lanka in Banking and a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (2004–2009). She has also served as a member of the Insurance Board of Sri Lanka and a member of Securities and Exchange Commission.

Deshamanya Weligamage Don Lakshman popularly known as Professor W. D. Lakshman is a Sri Lankan economist, professor, lecturer, academic and author who also served as the 15th Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and current chairman of the Monetary Board of the CBSL. He is regarded as one of the prominent economists of the country mainly well known for his immense contributions to policy related activities and for being specialised in the field of Economics.

Pujith Senadhi Bandara Jayasundara also simply known as Pujith Jayasundara is a former Sri Lankan police officer. He was the 34th Inspector-General of Police (IGP) from 2016 to 2020. He was sent on compulsory leave from April 2019 following the Easter bombings and retired in March 2020.

The COVID-19 pandemic in Sri Lanka is part of the ongoing worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 virus. The first case of the virus in Sri Lanka was confirmed on 27 January 2020, after a 44-year-old Chinese woman from Hubei, China, was admitted to the Infectious Disease Hospital in Angoda, Sri Lanka. As of 15 December 2022, a total of 671,776 COVID-19 cases had been recorded in the country, 654,919 patients had recovered from the disease, and 16,814 patients had died.

Mohamed Uvais Mohamed Ali Sabry, PC, MP, also known as Ali Sabry, is a Sri Lankan lawyer and politician. He is the Current Minister of Foreign Affairs serving since 22 July 2022. He previously served as the Minister of Finance until 9 May 2022. He was a Member of Parliament, appointed from the national list of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna. He also served as the Minister of Justice until 9 May 2022. He served as the defense counsel of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, chief legal adviser and President of the Muslim Federation of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna.

Madhura Withanage is a Sri Lankan politician and a member of the Sri Lankan parliament from Colombo Electoral District as a member of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna. He was the former mayor of Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte. He was appointed as the Chairman the Selection Committee of Parliament to Study the practical problems and difficulties that have arisen in relation to enhancing the rank in the Ease of Doing Business Index in Sri Lanka and make its proposals and recommendations.

Abeykoon Mudiyansalage Yupun Priyadarshana, known as Yupun Abeykoon, also referred to as Yupun Priyadarshana, is a Sri Lankan track and field athlete and a national record holder in men's 100m, men's 200m and in men's indoor 60m. On 3 July 2022, he became the first South Asian to break the 10-Second barrier for the men's 100 meters event at the Resisprint International competition, with a timing of 9.96 seconds, in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. He currently resides in Italy as he went on a scholarship to Italy in 2015. He is also attached to the Electronic and Mechanical Engineering Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army and represents Army Sports Club.
