The neorion at Samothrace was a long, rectangular, monumental structure built to house a dedicatory ship to the gods at the Sanctuary of the Great Gods on the Greek island of Samothrace in the northern Aegean Sea. It consisted of two main chambers: one in which an entire ship was displayed on marble supports, and a place where visitors to the building could view said ship. It is posited that the structure was built between 300 and 250 BCE. [1] Neorions are found at few other places in Greece, but oftentimes they displayed captured warships of the enemy as their centerpiece; however, there is some debate as to what sort of ship exactly was housed within the neorion at the sanctuary on Samothrace.
The neorion is built on the western hill of the sanctuary on Samothrace (number 6 in the site plan to the right). [1]
Materials used in its construction were local sandstone covered in plaster, imported marble from the nearby island of Thasos, and wood. [1]
The monument was "divided longitudinally by a colonnade and [wooden] grille... lighted by large windows" at each end of the building and along one side. [2] People who came to the neorion at the time of its initial construction would have had a clear view of the Aegean from the vantage point of the building; visitors would have entered through two large doors, framed with Thasian marble in the Doric style, on the Northern side of the structure where votive dedications could also be offered. [1] The imported marble was also used in supports to hold up the ship housed along the entire length of the Southern gallery. [1] Due to the layout of the neorion, visitors would have only been able to see one side of the ship through the wooden grille between the columns.
While the building itself is roughly eighty feet long and forty feet in width (28.7m x 13.5m), due to the division of the gallery the ship itself could have only been about twelve feet (4 m) wide; based on the supports, the ship appeared to have a symmetrical keel. [1]
It is not clear to archaeologists and historians exactly what sort of ship was housed in the neorion or by whom it was dedicated, however there are several hypotheses.
Theories posited by scholars at Emory University are that "[t]he Neorion could have housed a ship captured in battle, or one that brought victory, salvation or profit." [1]
According to de Grummond, "both the building and the ship may have been a gift of Antigonos Gonatas of Macedon." [2] Other historians have argued that "the building housed the escape ship that Arsinoe used to flee Ephesos following the battle at Kouropedion in 281." [3] [4] This potential origin for the ship could help explain the relatively small size of the vessel (compared to a larger warship as exampled in the neorion at the Sanctuary of Apollo at Delos). [1] Constantakopoulou argues that since the sanctuary had "strong maritime overtones," the presence of a ship that garnered safe voyage for its passenger would make sense as "protection at sea was one of the main rationales for participating in the Samothracian Mysteries." [3]
A half-life-sized marble head of "the Great Mother" goddess, a "syncretistic goddess, who was associated with both Asia and Greece", [5] was found at the neorion site in 1988. Due to its size, Katherine Welch argues that it was a votive, dedicatory statue rather than a cult statue; she also comments that this particular find is important in understanding the larger context of Samothracian and Greek portrayal of this important deity. [5] While not commenting on the location of the find, she states that this particular artifact found at the neorion site is "unique in being the only representation of a principle deity of the Samothracian mystery cult to have been found on this island." [5]
Mystery religions, mystery cults, sacred mysteries or simply mysteries, were religious schools of the Greco-Roman world for which participation was reserved to initiates (mystai). The main characterization of this religion is the secrecy associated with the particulars of the initiation and the ritual practice, which may not be revealed to outsiders. The most famous mysteries of Greco-Roman antiquity were the Eleusinian Mysteries, which predated the Greek Dark Ages. The mystery schools flourished in Late Antiquity; Julian the Apostate in the mid 4th century is known to have been initiated into three distinct mystery schools—most notably the mithraists. Due to the secret nature of the school, and because the mystery religions of Late Antiquity were persecuted by the Christian Roman Empire from the 4th century, the details of these religious practices are derived from descriptions, imagery and cross-cultural studies. Much information on the Mysteries comes from Marcus Terentius Varro.
Eileithyia or Ilithyia was the Greek goddess of childbirth and midwifery, and the daughter of Zeus and Hera. In the cave of Amnisos (Crete) she was related with the annual birth of the divine child, and her cult is connected with Enesidaon, who was the chthonic aspect of the god Poseidon. It is possible that her cult is related with the cult of Eleusis. In his Seventh Nemean Ode, Pindar refers to her as the maid to or seated beside the Moirai (Fates) and responsible for the creation of offspring. Her son was Sosipolis, who was worshiped at Elis.
Samothrace is a Greek island in the northern Aegean Sea. It is a municipality within the Evros regional unit of Thrace. The island is 17 km (11 mi) long and is 178 km2 (69 sq mi) in size and has a population of 2,596. Its main industries are fishing and tourism. Resources on the island include granite and basalt. Samothrace is one of the most rugged Greek islands, with Mt. Saos and its highest peak Fengari rising to 1,611 m (5,285 ft). The Winged Victory of Samothrace, which is now displayed at the Louvre in Paris, originates from the island.
In Greek mythology, the Cabeiri or Cabiri, also transliterated Kabeiri or Kabiri, were a group of enigmatic chthonic deities. They were worshiped in a mystery cult closely associated with that of Hephaestus, centered in the north Aegean islands of Lemnos and possibly Samothrace—at the Samothrace temple complex—and at Thebes. In their distant origins the Cabeiri and the Samothracian gods may include pre-Greek elements, or other non-Greek elements, such as Thracian, Tyrrhenian, Pelasgian, Phrygian or Hittite. The Lemnian cult was always local to Lemnos, but the Samothracian mystery cult spread rapidly throughout the Greek world during the Hellenistic period, eventually initiating Romans.
The Winged Victory of Samothrace, or the Nike of Samothrace, is a votive monument originally found on the island of Samothrace, north of the Aegean Sea. It is a masterpiece of Greek sculpture from the Hellenistic era, dating from the beginning of the 2nd century BC. It is composed of a statue representing the goddess Niké (Victory), whose head and arms are missing, and its base in the shape of a ship's bow.
The sculpture of ancient Greece is the main surviving type of fine ancient Greek art as, with the exception of painted ancient Greek pottery, almost no ancient Greek painting survives. Modern scholarship identifies three major stages in monumental sculpture in bronze and stone: the Archaic, Classical (480–323) and Hellenistic. At all periods there were great numbers of Greek terracotta figurines and small sculptures in metal and other materials.
Uni is the ancient goddess of marriage, fertility, family, and women in Etruscan religion and myth, and was the patron goddess of Perugia. She is identified as the Etruscan equivalent of Juno in Roman mythology, and Hera in Greek mythology. As the supreme goddess of the Etruscan pantheon, she is part of the Etruscan trinity, an original precursor to the Capitoline Triad, made up of her husband Tinia, the god of the sky, and daughter Menrva, the goddess of wisdom.
The National Archaeological Museum in Athens houses some of the most important artifacts from a variety of archaeological locations around Greece from prehistory to late antiquity. It is considered one of the greatest museums in the world and contains the richest collection of Greek Antiquity artifacts worldwide. It is situated in the Exarcheia area in central Athens between Epirus Street, Bouboulinas Street and Tositsas Street while its entrance is on the Patission Street adjacent to the historical building of the Athens Polytechnic university.
The Heraion of Samos was a large sanctuary to the goddess Hera, on the island of Samos, Greece, 6 km southwest of the ancient city of Samos. It was located in the low, marshy basin of the Imbrasos river, near where it enters the sea. The late Archaic temple in the sanctuary was the first of the gigantic free-standing Ionic temples, but its predecessors at this site reached back to the Geometric Period of the 8th century BC, or earlier. As a testimony to the mercantile and naval power of Samos during Archaic Greece, and its exceptional architecture, the site of temple's ruins, with its sole standing column, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the nearby archeological site Pythagoreion in 1992.
Lycosura was a city in the ancient Parrhasia region of south Arcadia said by Pausanias to be the oldest city in the world, although there is no evidence for its existence before the fourth century BCE. Its current significance is chiefly associated with the sanctuary of the goddess Despoina, which contained a colossal sculptural group that Pausanias wrote was made by Damophon of Messene. This group comprises acrolithic-technique statues of Despoina and Demeter seated on a throne, with statues of Artemis and the Titan Anytos standing on either side of them – all in Pentelic marble. The dates of both the temple and the sculptural group have occasioned some dispute. Remains of a stoa, altars, and other structures have been found at the site as well. The Sanctuary of Despoina at Lycosoura is located 9 km WSW of Megalopolis, 6.9 km SSE of Mount Lykaion, and 160 km SW of Athens. There is a small museum at the archaeological site housing small finds as well as part of the cult group, while the remains of the cult statues of Despoina and Demeter are displayed at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.
The Samothrace Temple Complex, known as the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, is one of the principal Pan-Hellenic religious sanctuaries, located on the island of Samothrace within the larger Thrace. Built immediately to the west of the ramparts of the city of Samothrace, it was nonetheless independent, as attested to by the dispatch of city ambassadors during festivals.
A néôrion is a type of classical Greek commemorative monument designed to celebrate a naval victory. It is a long gallery in which a ship is displayed, occasionally one of the enemy, in honour of the battle.
Mount Cynthus is located on the isle of Delos, part of the Greek Cyclades.
Kore is the modern term given to a type of free-standing ancient Greek sculpture of the Archaic period depicting female figures, always of a young age. Kouroi are the youthful male equivalent of kore statues.
Delphi Archaeological museum is one of the principal museums of Greece and one of the most visited. It is operated by the Greek Ministry of Culture. Founded in 1903, it has been rearranged several times and houses the discoveries made at the Panhellenic sanctuary of Delphi, which date from the Late Helladic (Mycenean) period to the early Byzantine era.
The Archaeological Museum of Delos is a museum on the island of Delos, near Mykonos in the South Aegean, Greece. It is noted for its extensive collection of statues unearthed in the surrounding area of the ancient site, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although the museum has a considerable collection, it does not contain all of the items found in Delos: a large quantity are on display in Athens at the National Archaeological Museum.
The Dedication of Nikandre is a Greek marble sculpture, made approximately around 650 BCE, held in the National Archaeological Museum, Athens, Greece. Nikandre, a woman from the island of Naxos, dedicated the statue in the temple of Artemis at Delos, the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. The statue, which was found during archaeological excavation in the 19th century, is one of the earliest surviving korai, or statues of women, and displays one of the oldest inscriptions of Ancient Greek in stone. Its representation and its placement within the existing stylistic periods of Greek sculpture have become the subject of extensive scholarship.
The Nike of Paionios is an ancient statue of the Greek goddess of victory, Nike, made by sculptor Paionios 425-420 BC. Made of Parian marble, the medium gives the statue a translucent and pure white look to it. Found in pieces, the statue was restored from many fragments but is lacking face, neck, forearms, part of left leg, toes, and some fragments of drapery. It also had wings. The goddess is shown landing gently on her left foot, with the drapery blown against her body.
The Temple of Poseidon is an ancient Greek temple on Cape Sounion, Greece, dedicated to the god Poseidon. There is evidence of the establishment of sanctuaries on the cape from as early as the 11th century BC Sounion’s most prominent temples, the Temple of Athena and the Temple of Poseidon, are however not believed to have been built until about 700 BC, and their kouroi date from about one hundred years later. The material and size of the offerings at the Temple of Poseidon indicate that it was likely frequented by members of the elite and the aristocratic class.
The Massacre of Samothrace was the mass murder and enslavement of the Greek population of the island of Samothrace. Following the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence, the Samothracians rose in revolt against the local Ottoman authorities. On 1 September 1821, an Ottoman punitive expedition under Castellan of Dardanelles Mehmet Paşa arrived at the island. After suppressing the uprising of the Samothracian rebels, the Ottoman troops killed or enslaved Greeks from the Island. The remaining Greeks after accepting the amnesty terms of the Ottoman Empire were granted pardon in April 1822, 7 months after the revolt.
