Nerm (born approx. 1980) is a DJ, music broadcaster, and film fixer, from Birmingham, England. [1] [2]

His first residency as a DJ was at the Ministry of Sound in Birmingham in the late 1990s. [1] Initially associated with the Asian Underground movement, then drum & bass, he is now a proponent of alternative and electronic music and curates festivals, radio shows, club nights and soundtracks.[ according to whom? ]

Early life

Nerm's passion for music and mixing started at the age of 10 whilst playing around with some D90 cassette tapes. Nerm made first "mixes" at a very young age using cut up cassette tapes edited together. At the age of 16, he transitioned from cassette to vinyl and started DJing.[ citation needed ]

Early career

Nerm gained press and TV attention in 2000[ according to whom? ] as the dancer in the electro-punk band Charged, signed to Nation Records. Around the same time he became the headline DJ at London's underground clubnight, Swaraj.[ citation needed ]

Swaraj was the platform on which Nerm pioneered Shiva Soundsystem, by amalgamating the live energy of a band with the dance floor by integrating musicians in his sets. Shiva Soundsystem began as a group, which then progressed into an extensive association of musicians, producers and DJs whose headquarters was a large warehouse space in Hackney, East London. Shiva Soundsystem helped introduce new, acts from across the world to clubbing audiences in London.[ according to whom? ]

Breakthrough

Nerm, alongside Shiva Soundsystem, curated events, first running parties at their warehouse HQ with international guest performers, then, more legitimately, playing weekend residencies in East London's underground night clubs.[ citation needed ] Herbal in Shoreditch and Vibe Bar in Brick Lane were two such residencies which featured guests such as Aphex Twin, Commix, Andrew Weatherall, Logistics, Colin Dale, Moving Fusion and Sub Swara.[ citation needed ] New live bands and offshoot live projects of other acts also featured including Aziz, Ian Brown's guitarist and co-writer of his debut solo album.[ citation needed ]

Shiva Soundsystem toured India and played Glastonbury every year from 2002.[ citation needed ]

In 2005 Shiva Soundsystem became a record label to release production from the collective and other associated artists. The first drum & bass/bass mix album fashioned for India, titled India:One was mixed and released by Nerm. [3] Shiva Soundsystem's releases obtained support from Pete Tong, Pendulum and Laurent Garnier.[ citation needed ]

Media

In tandem with Shiva Soundsystem came invitations for Nerm to host and share his passion for underground music with interest from TV and radio channels including E! Channel (Venezuela), Radio 1 [4] [ failed verification ] MTV India and BBC 2 which led to Nerm's progression as a broadcaster, at first on the BBC Asian Network radio station with his weekly show Electro East. Electro East represented a wide spectrum of underground music from across the world [6] with artists at the beginning of their ascents to stars as guests including Chase and Status, Noisia, Benga and Brookes Brothers and more specialist artists enduser, V.I.V.E.K (Deep Medi) and Amit (Commercial Suicide)

In 2008, with label-mate D-Code, Nerm embarked on a two-year run on BBC Radio 1 featuring a range of underground music.[ citation needed ] Guests included a series of "vs" DJ battles: [7] [ failed verification ]

Nerm & D-Code also stood in for Mary Anne Hobbs, [8] [ failed verification ] Ras Kwame and for 1Xtra's Drum & Bass Mix Show and presented alongside Annie Mac and Zane Lowe.

In 2010, Nerm presented his final shows on BBC Radio 1 and BBC Asian Network.[ citation needed ]

In 2011, Nerm began to host on BBC 6Music primarily presenting the 6Mix [9] [ failed verification ] alongside fellow residents Groove Armada, Erol Alkan, Andrew Weatherall, Tiga & Ben Watt and guests DJ Shadow and Thom Yorke.[ citation needed ]

He has also stood in for Gilles Peterson. [10]

Nerm continues to DJ with appearances at major[ weasel words ] festivals including Bestival, [11] with Riz Ahmed aka Riz MC, [12] Foreign Beggars [ citation needed ] and with Shiva Soundsystem. [13]

Film

In 2010, Nerm acted as consultant, remixer and supervisor on the music for Everywhere and Nowhere from Kidulthood director Menhaj Huda.[ citation needed ] He has since become more involved in film with work on soundtracks, marketing and a few cameo appearances.

They cemented their international status through their 10-year residency at London's famous superclub Fabric, in a career that has taken the duo to the largest stages on all four corners of this earth to perform.

Swami is a British Indian electronic music/ bhangra/ world music act from Birmingham, England. "Swami" is also the pseudonym of the DJ producer Diamond Duggal. Swami currently performs as a hybrid electronic DJ act with special world music guests and collaborations including Deep Forest and PunjabTronix.

The Bestival 2007 was the fourth installment of the Bestival a boutique music festival at Robin Hill on the Isle of Wight. It was held between 7 and 9 September. Tickets went on general sale on Friday 2 March, around 20,000 have been admitted for general release. Tickets were officially announced as sold out on 12 May.

Pirate Station was a drum and bass music festival, described as the world's biggest. It's held every year since 2003, when St. Petersburg held the first event. Noisia were a Dutch electronic music trio consisting of members Nik Roos, Martijn van Sonderen and Thijs de Vlieger from Groningen, Netherlands. They produced a wide variety of music including drum and bass, dubstep, breakbeat and house, releasing music under labels including Skrillex's Owsla, deadmau5's mau5trap and Jay-Z's Roc Nation. Noisia previously combined with the group Foreign Beggars to form the supergroup side project I Am Legion. They released their collaborative self-titled album on 2 September 2013. Noisia also have production credits under the pseudonym Nightwatch, such as for their work with Alexis Jordan, Hadouken!, Wiley and Wretch 32. They produced Hadouken!'s album For the Masses that charted at number 19 on the UK Albums Chart.

Shiva Soundsystem is a collective, record label and event host based in East London. Shiva Soundsystem grew out of the Asian Underground scene in London and went on to become more associated with other styles including drum and bass and electronica.

DJ Cable is a British DJ, based in Essex, England. Notable for winning numerous DJ competitions, such as the DMC UK Team Championships and the "Alizé Remixed" DJ competition, he was the tour DJ for Willy Moon for his 2012 European dates, and previously for UK singer/songwriter Yasmin. He also owns and runs Triangulum Recordings, a digital record label.

Electro house is a genre of electronic dance music and a subgenre of house music characterized by heavy bass and a tempo around 125–135 beats per minute. The term has been used to describe the music of many DJ Mag Top 100 DJs, including Benny Benassi, Skrillex, Steve Aoki, and Deadmau5.

Steven Bishop, known professionally as Oneman, is a DJ and producer from Streatham, London. His background is in pirate radio and he is a regular DJ on Rinse FM.
