The island is approximately 35 km (22 mi) long, its width varies from 15 km (9.3 mi) on the eastern end, to 6 km (3.7 mi) in the middle, to 17 km (11 mi) on the western end, with a total area of around 310 km2 (120 sq mi). According to the 2016 census, the population of the island is 1,232.

Rose Blanche – Harbour le Cou is a small town on Newfoundland's southwest shore, about 45 km at the end of Route 470 from Port aux Basques. This community is located in a barren area on the east side of a small bay. In this bay there are 2 harbours that were mainly used to provide shelter for fishing vessels. Scenery includes the rugged granite coastline, and the white and rocky cliffs of "Diamond Cove". Its granite lighthouse was in operation from 1873 to the 1940s. After it was abandoned in the 1940s the building fell into ruins. The spiral stone staircase extends into the tower wall and kept the tower from collapsing while the remainder of the lighthouse fell to ruin. In 1999 the lighthouse was fully reconstructed and serves as a tourist attraction.

Port Rexton is a small town in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is located on the East Coast of the island of Newfoundland at the north end of Robinhood Bay, about 10 minutes east of Trinity and 3 hours north of St. John's. The town had a population of 690 in 1940, 449 in 1951, 454 in 1956, 351 in the Canada 2006 Census, 338 in the Canada 2011 Census and most recently 340 in the Canada 2016 Census. The town is part of a group of communities known as the Trinity Bight. The town is home to a few small businesses, including inns and restaurants as well as the Skerwink trail which connects Port Rexton to Trinity Harbour.

Hickman's Harbour is a village southeast of Clarenville, on Random Island in Trinity Bay. The first Waymaster in 1881 was Joseph Pilley. By 1900, Hickman's Harbour, the site of the best deep-water anchorage on the island, had become the centre of the Random Island fishing and shipbuilding industries. Other methods of employment include sawmilling and slate mining, though the actual quarry was across the sound in Nut Cove. By 1901 Hickman's Harbour was the most populous community on Random Island with 309 people. The population was 476 in 1956.
Kerley's Harbour was a small outport village on Trinity Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Kerley's Harbour was formerly called Careless Harbour. The first recorded settlement of Kerley's Harbour was in the 1845 Newfoundland census, with a population of 40. However, the community existed long before this time as William Maher married Flora Jeans on October 15, 1821, in Careless Harbour as it is recorded in the Roman Catholic records. The population reached a peak of 90 residents in 1935. The main settlers of the community were Millers, Ivanys, Kings and Clarkes.
