New Cush, historically known as Himan, [1] is a community that lies between Lotukei and Natinga in Eastern Equatoria state of South Sudan. It was the headquarters of the Sudan People's Liberation Army until it was moved to Rumbek. [2] New Cush lies in the Lotukei Mountains on South Sudan's border with Uganda. Since 2006, the camp at Himan has been used for training the SPLA's special forces. The US State Department had provided funding for trainers including Western contractors and consultants and Ethiopian troops. According to a spokesman, the "commando training conducted by the Ethiopians focuses on professional military tactics and specialized skills". [3]

Natinga is a refugee camp and a school that was established in 1993 in South Sudan for boys forced from their homes by the Second Sudanese Civil War. It is the center of a payam in Kapoeta East County of Eastern Equatoria.

The Ketebo people is an ethnic group in South Sudan. Ketebo has been referred to as "Lokadhan" by J.H. The Ketebo are the inhabitant of Madial, which was a Ugandan Protectorate upto 1925 and was transferred to Sudan administration in 1926. The Ketebo sometime referred to by the Didinga as "Loceha/Loceka" and they Dongotono bolted from the Ketebo and the Lopited bolted from Dongotono. The Ketebo live in Bira, which is one of the Payams of Kidepo County, Torit, Eastern Equatoria State of South Sudan. Their land is Bira which include Kalabe, Koriang, Toomodo, Irobi, Morunyang, Lorife, Ibakany, Tabak lo Lokure, Napeyase, Nakoringole, Naitahapel, Kamulach, Okosio, Naurkori, Namosingo, Ofi, Otome, Arata, Lojilingare, Lofus, Lorum, Ateda,Madiel and Lonyili Mountain in Kidepo county of Torit, Eastern Equatoria state in South Sudan. The Ketebo people are also found in Lotukei, Kikilai, Petalado, Lorema in Didinga Corridor and in Lokori, Napotpot and Karenga, Uganda. Ketebo is one of the smallest tribes in South Sudan and they speak Oketeboi. The Ketebo in Uganda side are called Mening, which is also one of the smallest tribes in Uganda. Southern Sudan Autonomous Region (2005–11)

Southern Sudan was an autonomous region consisting of the ten southern states of Sudan between its formation in July 2005 and independence as the Republic of South Sudan in July 2011. The autonomous government was initially established in Rumbek and later moved to Juba. It was bordered by Ethiopia to the east; Kenya, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the south; and the Central African Republic to the west. To the north lies the predominantly Arab and Muslim region directly under the control of the central government. The region's autonomous status was a condition of a peace agreement between the Sudan People's Liberation Army/Movement (SPLA/M) and the Government of Sudan represented by the National Congress Party ending the Second Sudanese Civil War. The conflict was Africa's longest running civil war.
