The New York and District Championships was a men's grass court tennis tournament held at the Staten Island Cricket and Baseball Club, Staten Island, New York City, United States for only two editions in 1882 and 1883. [1]

The New York and District Championships was a late 19th century tennis event first staged in June 1882 at the Staten Island Cricket and Baseball Club, Staten Island, New York City, United States [1] The first and final known winner of the men's singles was American player Richard Field Conover who defeated Frank Sherman Benson [2] 6–1, 0–6, 6–5 in the final. [1] The final known men's edition in 1883 was won by American player Clarence M. S. Clark who defeated the British player William Glyn. [3]

The men's tournament was held from August 27 to September 3 on the outdoor grass courts at the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island. The women's tournament was held from June 11 to June 15 on the outdoor grass courts at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The men's doubles event was played at the Staten Island Cricket Club in Livingston, Staten Island, New York. It was the 9th U.S. National Championships and the second Grand Slam tournament of the year. The 1883 men's tennis season was the eighth annual tennis season, consisting of 71 tournaments. The Wimbledon Championships was won by William Renshaw for the third consecutive year, while Richard Sears continued his dominance at the U.S. National Championships also winning a third successive title. Other big winners this season were Ernest Renshaw, picking up the Irish Championships, Herbert Wilberforce winning the Northern Lawn Tennis Championships in Manchester, and Herbert Lawford collecting his second and final title at the Princes Club Championships.
