Lieutenant General Sir Nicholas Arthur William "Nick" Pope, KCB , CBE (born 1962) is a senior British Army officer. He served as Master-General of the Ordnance from 2011 to 2013, and was appointed to his current assignment as Deputy Chief of the General Staff in December 2015.

Lieutenant general, formerly more commonly lieutenant-general, is a senior rank in the British Army and the Royal Marines. It is the equivalent of a multinational three-star rank; some British lieutenant generals sometimes wear three-star insignia, in addition to their standard insignia, when on multinational operations.

The British Army is the principal land warfare force of the United Kingdom, a part of British Armed Forces. As of 2018, the British Army comprises just over 81,500 trained regular (full-time) personnel and just over 27,000 trained reserve (part-time) personnel.

The Master-General of the Ordnance (MGO) was a very senior British military position from 1415 to 2013 with some changes to the name, usually held by a serving general. The Master-General of the Ordnance was responsible for all British artillery, engineers, fortifications, military supplies, transport, field hospitals and much else, and was not subordinate to the commander-in chief of the British military. In March 2013 the holder was titled as "Director Land Capability and Transformation", but still sat on the Army Board as Master-General of the Ordnance; in September 2013 the post was eliminated.

Military career

Educated at Desborough School in Maidenhead and Jesus College, Cambridge, Pope was commissioned into the Royal Corps of Signals in 1981. [1] He became Brigade Major at Headquarters, 19th Mechanised Brigade in 1997 and was deployed in that role to Bosnia. [1] He was appointed Commanding Officer of 30th Signal Regiment in November 2000 and became Deputy Director of Defence Resources and Plans at the Ministry of Defence in late 2002. [1] He went on to be Commander of 1st Signal Brigade at Rheindahlen in September 2005 and was subsequently deployed to Afghanistan. [1] He was appointed Strategic Communication Officer to the Chief of the Defence Staff in Spring 2011 [2] and became Director of Battlefield Manoeuvre and Master-General of the Ordnance in November 2011. [3] After that he became Director General Capability in October 2013, [4] and Deputy Chief of the General Staff in December 2015. [5] [6]

Royal Corps of Signals one of the combat support arms of the British Army

The Royal Corps of Signals is one of the combat support arms of the British Army. Signals units are among the first into action, providing the battlefield communications and information systems essential to all operations. Royal Signals units provide the full telecommunications infrastructure for the Army wherever they operate in the world. The Corps has its own engineers, logistics experts and systems operators to run radio and area networks in the field. It is responsible for installing, maintaining and operating all types of telecommunications equipment and information systems, providing command support to commanders and their headquarters, and conducting electronic warfare against enemy communications.

Pope was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in the 2019 Birthday Honours. [7]

The 2019 Queen's Birthday Honours are appointments by some of the 16 Commonwealth realms of Queen Elizabeth II to various orders and honours to reward and highlight good works by citizens of those countries. The Birthday Honours are awarded as part of the Queen's Official Birthday celebrations during the month of June.

He went on to be Chief of Defence Intelligence in 2006, Chief of Joint Operations in 2009 and the first Commander of Joint Forces Command in December 2011 before being appointed Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff in May 2013. General Sir Nicholas Patrick Carter, is a Kenyan-born senior British Army officer. He served as commanding officer of 2nd Battalion, Royal Green Jackets in which role he was deployed to Bosnia in 1998 and Kosovo in 1999.
