She is best known for her on-site paintings, drawing from scenes of the natural world and everyday life. Her work bends material fact and immaterial illusion. Halvorson is a Professor of Art and Chair of Graduate Studies in Painting at Boston University.

A Revolution on Canvas is an 2023 American documentary film, directed and produced by Sara Nodjoumi and Till Schauder. It follows Nicky Nodjoumi as he flees Iran in 1980, due to his controversial paintings at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art.
