Nico Horn

Johannes Nicolaas Horn is a Namibian Professor of Human rights and Constitutional Law at the University of Namibia (UNAM) since 2002. He holds PhDs in Theology and Law, and was an advocate in the Office of the Prosecutor-General, and Prosecutor in the High Court of Namibia. He worked as UNAM's Director of the Human Rights and Documentation Centre, Dean of the Law Faculty from 2008 until 2010 and also served on the UNAM Governing Council. [1] Nico Horn is the founding editor and a founding trustee of the Namibia Law Journal and chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the SADC Law Journal . He was also a Pastor for the Pentecostal church in South Africa.

Horn is a committee nominee for the United Nations Human Rights Council. [2]

Education

Horn earned a doctorates in theology from the University of Western Cape, a doctor of law from the University of Bremen in Germany, a Master of Arts (cum laude) from University of Port Elizabeth, a Master of Law from the University of South Africa, a Baccalaureus Procurationis (South Africa) from Rand Afrikaans University (now the University of Johannesburg), and a Bachelors in Theology from the University of South Africa (UNISA). He is an admitted legal practitioner of the High Court of Namibia. [3] [4] He worked as a journalist covering stories of student resistance against Apartheid in Soweto, Johannesburg in South Africa.

After two acting appointments, Erold Naomab was appointed vice-chancellor in January 2021. The largely ceremonial role of chancellor of the university is held by Peter Katjavivi.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">LGBT rights in Namibia</span>

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender+ (LGBT+) persons in Namibia face legal challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents. Discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is not banned in Namibia, and households headed by same-sex couples are not eligible for the same legal protections available to opposite-sex couples.

The University of Pretoria Faculty of Law was established in 1908. It consists of six academic departments, six centres, two law clinics, and the Pretoria University Law Press (PULP). This faculty ranked best in Africa for the fourth year in a row with leading Departments of Jurisprudence; Mercantile Law; Private Law; Procedural Law; Public Law; and Centre for Human Rights. The faculty offers the undergraduate LLB degree, and postgraduate LLM/MPhil and LLD/PhD degrees. 

Johann van der Westhuizen (born 26 May 1952 in Windhoek, South West Africa is a former judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa. Before his judicial appointment, he was a professor at the University of Pretoria Faculty of Law and the founding director of its Centre for Human Rights.

The Supreme Court of Namibia is the highest court in the judicial system of Namibia. It is the court of last resort and the highest appellate court in the country. It is located in the city centre of Namibia's capital city, Windhoek. A Supreme Court decision is supreme in that it can only be reversed by an Act of Parliament that contradicts it, or by another ruling of the Supreme Court itself.

Narandran "Jody" Kollapen is a Judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa. He was appointed by President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa on 24 December 2021, and began his service on 1 January 2022. He had previously served as an acting justice of the Constitutional Court for a six-month period during 2017.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Turnhalle (Windhoek)</span>

The Turnhalle is a building in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. Built during the era of Imperial Germany's colonisation of South West Africa, it has been through a variety of uses, most prominently as the venue for the 1975–1977 Turnhalle Constitutional Conference, an attempt to quell armed resistance waged by the People's Liberation Army of Namibia against South African occupation. The Turnhalle housed the Tribunal court of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) until disbandment in 2012.

Job Shipululo Amupanda is a Namibian activist and politician who served as Mayor of the City of Windhoek, in office from 2 December 2020 to 1 December 2021. He is an academic at the University of Namibia before he co-founded the Affirmative Repositioning movement, a movement setup by radical youth activists of the SWAPO Party Youth League in November 2014.

Bongani Christopher Majola is an advocate of the High Court of South Africa, an academic, human rights scholar, and the previous Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). He currently serves as the chairperson of the South African Human Rights Commission.

Shekutaamba Väinö yaVäinö Nambala Shekutaamba Väinö Väinö Nambala, popularly known as S V V Nambala, was born from a peasant family at Onewawa village, Omuntele constituency, in Ondonga kingdom in the Oshikoto Region today, on the 5 th August 1952. He is the second last born of 19 siblings. His education career started at the age of ten in 1962. He attended school at Ondjamba Primary School ; Omuntele Primary and High Primary School ; Onayena Boys School (1969); Ongwediva High School and Oshigambo High School.

The Legal Assistance Centre is a human rights organization in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. The organization was established in 1988 during the apartheid era to litigate on behalf of people who were oppressed by the government and continues to operate today.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Joseph Kalimbwe</span> Zambian politician

Joseph Kalimbwe is a Zambian politician at the ruling United Party for National Development of Hakainde Hichilema, author and activist. Previously, he was president of the African Union youth simulation in 2014 and president of the student representative council of the University of Namibia in 2017. He has written for the Namibian Sun, and has published three books including Persecuted in Search of Change in 2017, The Pain of An Empty Stomach in 2015 and Teenage-Hood & the Impact of the Western World in 2014.

E. Tendayi Achiume is the Alicia Miñana Professor of Law and former Faculty Director of the Promise Institute for Human Rights at the University of California, Los Angeles. She served as the United Nations special rapporteur on Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance from her appointment in September 2017 until November 2022. She was the first woman appointed to this position since its creation in 1993.
