French cinema consists of the film industry and its film productions, whether made within the nation of France or by French film production companies abroad. It is the oldest and largest precursor of national cinemas in Europe; with primary influence also on the creation of national cinemas in Asia.
Richard Stanley is a South African filmmaker, known for his work in the horror genre. He began his career making short films and music videos, and subsequently directed the feature films Hardware (1990) and Dust Devil (1992), both of which are considered cult classics. He was the original director of The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996), but was fired early into principal photography due to creative differences, an episode recounted in the 2014 documentary Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau. In 2019, he returned to feature films after more than 20 years, directing the H. P. Lovecraft adaptation Color Out of Space.

In the early 1900s, Pathé became the world's largest film equipment and production company, as well as a major producer of phonograph records. Éric Neuhoff is a French novelist and journalist. He debuted in 1982 a journalist at Le Quotidien de Paris and used a style nicknamed "néo-hussard", after the Hussards movement of the 1950s. He thus became associated with writers such as Denis Tillinac, Patrick Besson and Didier Van Cauwelaert, who debuted around the same time and used a similar style. He received the 1990 Roger Nimier Prize, and has received awards such as the Prix des Deux Magots, Prix Interallié and Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française.
The Central African Republic is one of the world's poorest countries and the film industry is correspondingly small. The first film made in CAR appears to have been Les enfants de la danse, a short French-made ethnographic documentary of 1945. Joseph Akouissone was the first Central African to make a film in the country, with his 1981 documentary Un homme est un homme; he was followed by the documentaries made in the 1980s by Léonie Yangba Zowe. Since then a series of ongoing conflicts and economic crises have severely limited the potential growth of film-making in the country. The first feature-length drama made in the country was Le silence de la forêt, a 2003 CAR-Gabon-Cameroon co-production about the Biaka people.
