Nito Verdera (short name of Joan Verdera i Escandell, Ibiza, 1934 - Ibiza, 2022) [1] was an Ibizan journalist, merchant marine pilot and researcher about Christopher Columbus. [2] A member of the Centre d'Estudis Colombins, he has published several books in which he maintains the thesis that Columbus was crypto-Jewish and from Ibiza.

He left the merchant marine to dedicate himself to journalism as editor of the Diario de Ibiza , correspondent of Radio Nacional de España, and collaborator of the EFE agency, Catalunya Ràdio, Cadena COPE and Televisió Española.

He had studied the place names that Columbus used in the Indies and concludes that a significant part is related to Ibiza and Formentera. After researching the Columbus families in Ibiza, and the navigator's knowledge related to the Mallorca school of cartography, he states that Columbus was of Jewish origin born in Ibiza. [3]

His latest book, Cristóbal Colón, el libro de las Falacias y cuatro Verdades, had been presented at the Ateneo de Madrid by the current Duke of Veragua, a direct descendant of the Admiral. The book not only fervently demonstrates Columbus' relationship with Ibiza and his Jewish origin, but dismantles one by one all the "fallacies" that have surrounded the discoverer.

Nito Verdera was also, due to his trade as a merchant marine pilot, an outstanding scholar of pre-Columbian maps of America. In his latest book he shows that the Cantino Map contains the evidence (Portuguese place names) of Portuguese knowledge of the Caribbean and Florida before it was explored by Juan Ponce de León.

He added, as proof of the Admiral's cultural Catalanity, several lists of colloquial, nautical and toponymic vocabulary of words used by Columbus in his writings, which prove not only that Columbus was Catalan-speaking but, according to the Diccionario Etimológico itself Castilian and Hispanic, Columbus is the first to use many words in Spanish, especially nautical vocabulary, all of which, according to the Etymological and Complementary Dictionary of the Catalan Language, were documented in Catalan much earlier.

He is also the one who has best followed the line of research of Simon Wiesenthal and Madariaga that Columbus was Jewish. In his latest book, he expands on the theses of the famous Nazi hunter with the contributions and studies of Professor Estelle Irizarry (study of the Book of Prophecies by Columbus), Sara Leibovicci (the initials Bet Hai on the headers of Columbus's letters to their children).

He had studied what he called the linguistic DNA of Columbus, together with Dr. Estelle Irizarry, who had already published the article [4] of this study in the magazine Aki Yerushalayim , the only magazine of scope world written in Ladino.

Vicent Tur Torres, was a Spanish school teacher and PSIB politician from Eivissa island. He was councilor of the opposition of the Insular Council of Ibiza and Formentera between 1984 and 1987, and its vice president between 1999 and 2003, under the presidency of Pilar Costa. He was also mayor of Sant Joan de Labritja between 1987 and 1989. Between 1984 and 1987, and again between 1991 and 2007 he was member of the Parliament of the Balearic Islands. He was a politician very dedicated to the agrarian causes, becoming Insular Director of Agriculture.

Ara Més is an electoral alliance formed in the Balearic Islands in April 2022 between More for Mallorca (Més), More for Menorca, Now Eivissa and independent people from Formentera, with the intention to contest the 2023 Spanish general election. In June 2023, following the early election call after the 28 May local and regional elections, the alliance started talks to join Yolanda Díaz's Sumar, reaching an agreement as Sumar Més, with the exception of Ara Eivissa, that rejected to be part of the coalition. Despite this, Ara Eivissa contested the Senate election as part of the Ibiza and Formentera in the Senate coalition. In early 2024, Ara Més joined Ara Repúbliques for the European Parliament election. In their electoral debut Ara Més ended up as the 5th most voted party in the Balearic Islands with 16.457 votes finishing after the far right.

The Centre d'Estudis Colombins (CEC) is an association dedicated to the study of the historical links between Christopher Columbus and the discovery of America and the Catalan world, particularly, in the possible Catalanity of Christopher Columbus. The Center was born in 1989 following a cycle of conferences organized by Òmnium Cultural in Barcelona.

Estelle Irizarry (1937-2017) was a Costa Rican professor emeritus of Hispanic literature at Georgetown University, Washington, DC. She was one of the first historians to provide objective evidence based on scientific criteria and methodology to solve the mysteries surrounding the identity of Christopher Columbus.
