No. 13 Air Experience Flight (AEF) is an Air Experience Flight of No. 6 Flying Training School RAF, based at Joint Helicopter Command Flying Station Aldergrove in Northern Ireland. Sharing three Grob Tutor T1 trainer aircraft with the Northern Ireland Universities Air Squadron it offers flight experiences to cadets of the Air Training Corps and the RAF elements of the Combined Cadet Force. It was established in 2019, more than 22 years after the previous Northern Ireland AEF had been disbanded.

Operational role

13 AEF's role is to provide experience of flying to Royal Air Force Air Cadets (which includes the Air Training Corps and the RAF elements of the Combined Cadet Force). The AEF allows cadets to control the flight of an aircraft, under supervision of its commander, at heights above 1,000 feet (300 m). [1]

It currently flies three Grob Tutor T1 trainer aircraft, which it shares with Northern Ireland Universities Air Squadron (NIUAS). [2] [3] 13 AEF uses Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve pilots and had 17 pilots on its staff in 2020. It aims to offer an air experience flight every year to every cadet in Northern Ireland. [2]

History

An Air Experience Flight had operated in Northern Ireland until the late 1990s but was disbanded. After this air cadets wishing to take part in a powered flight had to travel to No. 10 Air Experience Flight RAF (at RAF Woodvale, Merseyside), No. 4 Air Experience Flight RAF (Glasgow Airport) or No. 12 Air Experience Flight RAF (RAF Leuchars, Fife). [1] The University Air Squadron in Northern Ireland was previously Queen's University Air Squadron and was also disbanded in the late 1990s. [3] It was reformed as NIUAS in November 2015. [2]

Alternative cadet flying provision in the UK was provided via the Volunteer Gliding Squadron. Airworthiness concerns grounded the gliding fleet in 2014 and it was decided that thereafter a reduced gliding provision would be offered. In March 2016 Julian Brazier, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Reserves, announced that the AEF and University Air Squadron programme would be expanded to make up the shortfall. An additional 25 Grob Tutor aircraft would be procured and two new AEFs established, 13 AEF and 14 AEF. At this point, it was considered that 14 AEF would be the Northern Ireland flight. [4] Actually the Northern Ireland AEF was established as No. 13 Air Experience Flight RAF. It reached full operating capacity, alongside NIUAS, on 25 February 2019. It was more than 22 years since an AEF had operated in Northern Ireland. The occasion was marked with flypasts of Typhoon and F-35 aircraft. [1]

An Air Experience Flight (AEF) is a training unit of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve whose main purpose is to give introductory flying experience to cadets from the Air Training Corps and the Combined Cadet Force. As of 2019, thirteen AEFs are active.

Grob G 115 German trainer aircraft

The Grob G 115 is a general aviation fixed-wing aircraft, primarily used for flight training. It is built in Germany by Grob Aircraft. The E variant with a 3-blade variable pitch propeller is in service with the Finnish Air Force, the Royal Navy and Army Air Corps for Flying Grading and in the Royal Air Force as part of No. 6 Flying Training School which provides flying to both University Air Squadrons and Air Experience Flights to Cadets of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets. As of 2020, the Tutor is still being used by the RAF for some Elementary Flying Training (3FTS) but is due to be phased out in favour of its replacement, the Prefect T1.

Volunteer Gliding Squadrons (VGSs) are Royal Air Force (UK) Flying Training units, operating military Viking T1 conventional gliders to train cadets from the Royal Air Force Air Cadets.

No. 10 Air Experience Flight RAF Military unit

10 Air Experience Flight (AEF) is one of thirteen such units run by the Air Cadet Organisation of the Royal Air Force. It was formed in the 1950s, along with other AEFs, to teach basic flying to members of the Air Training Corps (ATC), Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Section. It mainly flies cadets from the local wings of Cumbria and Lancashire Wing, Greater Manchester Wing, Merseyside Wing, No. 2 Welsh Wing, the East Lancashire Wing, CCF contingents and Air Scouts. It will also fly cadets on annual camp at RAF Valley, when it will sometimes send an aircraft to RAF Mona for a day to fly the cadets on camp there. This increases the chance of flying for all cadets and cuts the road journey from RAF Valley to RAF Woodvale. Air cadets and CCF sections from Northern Ireland also fly at Woodvale.

University of Birmingham Air Squadron University flying squadron of the Royal Air Force

The University of Birmingham Air Squadron, commonly known as UBAS, is a squadron within the Royal Air Force established on 3 May 1941. It is based at RAF Cosford, Shropshire, and flies a fleet of six Grob Tutors. In 2009 the squadron upgraded the aircraft to the Grob Tutor EA which has an advanced avionics suite. The Squadron has four Flights, A, B, C and D; each with a student Flight Commander who holds the rank of Acting Pilot Officer and a Deputy who holds the rank of Officer Cadet. UBAS is also the parent squadron of 8 Air Experience Flight, who jointly fly UBAS' Tutor fleet.

Within the framework of the training programme Air Training Corps cadets have the opportunity of taking part in many activities. On most Squadrons the only compulsory activities in the ATC year are attendance at various church parades, usually ATC Sunday and Remembrance Sunday. Many wings also insist that attending Wing Parade is compulsory.

2353 Squadron ATC is a squadron in the Air Training Corps based in Ystrad Mynach, Wales, UK. The squadron is part of No. 1 Welsh Wing ATC in the Wales and West region of the ATC. The squadron was founded on 4 September 1960.
