The No. 19 Squadron is a multi-role squadron of the Pakistan Air Force, [1] [2] [3] known for its rich history and significant operational achievements. Established in February 1958 at Mauripur airbase with 12 F-86F Sabres, the squadron has seen several relocations and equipment upgrades over the years. It played a pivotal role in the 1965 Indo-Pakistani war under the command of Squadron Leader Sajad Haider, demonstrating its prowess in Close Air Support missions. The squadron's legacy includes successful airstrikes against the Indian army and airfields, significantly impacting the course of the war.
It was raised in February 1958 at Mauripur airbase with 12 F-86F Sabres. In 1962, the squadron shifted to Peshawar airbase and stayed there till 1967 when it was transferred back to Masroor. The squadron received Canadair Sabre Mk. 6s just before the 1971 War broke out and continued to operate the aircraft till 1977 when it was re-equipped with Shenyang F-6 air superiority fighters. After receiving Chengdu F-7Ps in 1990, the squadron was converted into an OCU and transferred to Mianwali airbase. [2] [4]
On 21 May 2014, the squadron was re-equipped with F-16 ADFs purchased from Jordan. A re-equipment ceremony was held for the occasion which was attended by the Army and Air force chiefs (Raheel Sharif and Tahir Rafique Butt) along with veterans from the squadron and high-ranking officials from the Pakistani and Jordanian diplomatic community. The 19 squadron took active part in the 1965 Indo-Pakistani war under the command of Squadron Leader Sajad Haider mainly carrying out Close Air Support (CAS) missions on Indian army convoys and IAF airfields. On the morning of 6 September, a patrol team of F-86s which was being led by Sajad happened to spot spearheading elements of the Indian army's Lahore invasion at Wagah rolling down the Grand Trunk road. The F-86s went on to strafe the convoys for roughly 15 minutes with their 5-inch Zuni rockets and .50 cal machine guns. These strikes significantly slowed down the main Indian advance towards Lahore and gave the Army crucial time to send in re-enforcements to the area. [7]
In another strike on the IAF's Pathankot airbase, Sajad Haider led another team of 8 F-86 Sabres to Pathankot airbase to carry out what would be PAF's most successful airstrike against an IAF airbase during the war. Armed with Armor Piercing Incendiary (API) rounds and drop tanks, the Sherdils destroyed 7 Mig-21s, 5 Dassault Mystère IV and a single C-119 transport aircraft along with significant structural damage to the IAF base. The North American F-86 Sabre, sometimes called the Sabrejet, is a transonic jet fighter aircraft. Produced by North American Aviation, the Sabre is best known as the United States' first swept-wing fighter that could counter the swept-wing Soviet MiG-15 in high-speed dogfights in the skies of the Korean War (1950–1953), fighting some of the earliest jet-to-jet battles in history. Considered one of the best and most important fighter aircraft in that war, the F-86 is also rated highly in comparison with fighters of other eras. Although it was developed in the late 1940s and was outdated by the end of the 1950s, the Sabre proved versatile and adaptable and continued as a front-line fighter in numerous air forces.
The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) is the aerial warfare branch of the Pakistan Armed Forces, tasked primarily with the aerial defence of Pakistan, with a secondary role of providing air support to the Pakistan Army and Pakistan Navy when required, and a tertiary role of providing strategic airlift capability to Pakistan. As of 2024, as per the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the PAF has more than 70,000 active-duty personnel. PAF stands as the eight largest Air Force in the world. PAF is the largest Air Force of the Muslim world in terms of aircraft fleet. Its primary mandate and mission is "to provide, in synergy with other inter-services, the most efficient, assured and cost effective aerial defence of Pakistan." Since its establishment in 1947, the PAF has been involved in various combat operations, providing aerial support to the operations and relief efforts of the Pakistani military. Under Article 243, the Constitution of Pakistan appoints the President of Pakistan as the civilian Commander-in-Chief of the Pakistan Armed Forces. The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), by statute a four-star air officer, is appointed by the President with the consultation and confirmation needed from the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Operation Chengiz Khan was the code name assigned to the preemptive strikes carried out by the Pakistani Air Force (PAF) on the forward airbases and radar installations of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on the evening of 3 December 1971, and marked the formal initiation of hostilities of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The operation targeted 11 of India's airfields and also included artillery strikes on Indian positions in Kashmir. The targets were the Indian Airbases of Amritsar, Ambala, Agra, Awantipur, Bikaner, Halwara, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Pathankot, Bhuj, Srinagar and Uttarlai and air defence radars at Amritsar and Faridkot.
During the Indo-Pakistani war of 1965, the Indian and Pakistani Air Forces engaged in large-scale aerial combat for the first time. In the air war, which took place in September, both air forces conducted thousands of defensive and offensive sorties over Indian and Pakistani airspace. Both India and Pakistan claimed victory in the air war; Pakistan claimed to have destroyed 104 Indian aircraft and lost 19, and India claimed to have destroyed 73 Pakistani aircraft and lost 35 of its own. The air war ended in a stalemate.
Wing Commander Mervyn Leslie MiddlecoatSJ & Bar was a Pakistani fighter pilot in the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) who was involved in a number of aerial battles during the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pakistani wars, before being shot down on 12 December 1971. He was one of a number of distinguished Pakistani strike and fighter pilots of the period. Before his death he was stationed at Mauripur, Karachi, Pakistan where he flew the F-104 Starfighter.
Air Commodore Muhammad Mahmood AlamSJ & Bar SI(M), popularly known as M. M. Alam, was a Pakistani fighter pilot and war hero, officially credited by the Pakistan Air Force with having downed five Indian fighter aircraft in under a minute and establishing a world record during the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War.
The No. 24 Electronic Warfare Squadron, nicknamed the Blinders, is an electronic warfare unit of the Pakistan Air Force equipped with DA 20EW Faclons. Air Commodore Sajad Haider SJ also known by his aliases as Nosey Haider and Saviour of Lahore, is a retired Pakistani fighter pilot and former one-star rank officer in the Pakistan Air Force. He is best known for leading a devastating Blitzkrieg on the Pathankot airbase in India on 6 September during the Indo-Pakistani war of 1965. Haider personally destroyed four Indian aircraft, 11 Indian tanks and damaged another three. The formation destroyed a total of 13 Indian aircraft including 2 MiG-21s. The following day, Haider led his pilots to Srinagar Air Force Station where they destroyed another three aircraft. He is also an author, columnist, businessman, defence analyst, political commentator, and philanthropist.
Squadron Leader Ghani Akbar SJ ,is a retired Pakistani fighter pilot and officer in the Pakistani Air Force. He is best known for taking part in the devastating blitzkrieg on the Pathankot airbase in India during the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War, in which he doubled back and initiated a second attack on the airbase against the orders of his commanding officer Sajad Haider. Additionally, his formation destroyed 13 Indian aircraft including nine MiG-21s.
Air Commodore Masroor Hosain SPk was a one-star rank pioneering officer of the Pakistan Air Force, aerobatic pilot, fighter pilot, and captain of the RPAF's Hockey team during their tour to Australia and New Zealand in the summer of 1952.
Air Commodore Fuad Shahid Hussain SBt TPk better known as FS Hussain, F.S., King of Fury, and the Prince of Pilots, was among the pioneering officers of the Pakistan Air Force, a fighter pilot, aerobatic pilot, and one-star rank air officer. During WWII, his squadron was part of the BCOF in Imperial Japan, stationed on an aircraft carrier. While there, FS as an aerial photographer, was tasked with capturing images of the bombed-out cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, unaware of the radiation exposure risks at that time, which eventually led to his death while in service, as Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Training) at the PAF Headquarters.
The Falcons is a disbanded aerobatics display team of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) which flew North American F-86 Sabres and is known for executing a World record loop with 16 F-86 Sabres during an aerial display on 2 February 1958 at Mauripur. The team inspired the British RAF's Black Arrows which went on to beat the record with 22 Hawker Hunters.
