Nomatemba Gugulethu Pudnixia Olivia Tambo (known as Thembi Tambo, born 1957 [1] ) is a British-South African diplomat and politician, who was appointed High Commissioner of South Africa to the United Kingdom in March 2018. [2] She was succeeded from 1 November 2022 by Jeremiah Nyamane Mamabolo. [3]
Tambo has a BA in History and English at the University of Roehampton in London. This was followed by a law degree at University of the Witwatersrand in 2002. In 2007, she completed her diplomatic training. [4]
Tambo was part of the Anti-Apartheid Movement. [5]
Tambo is the daughter of Oliver Tambo. [6] She attended the dedication of a statue to him in 2019. [7]

Christabel Gurney, OBE is an activist and historian, who was involved in the Anti-Apartheid Movement. She joined the organisation in 1969, and was the editor of its journal Anti-Apartheid News from 1969 to 1980. Later, she was secretary of the Notting Hill Anti-Apartheid Group. Devikarani Priscilla Sewpal Jana was a South African human rights lawyer, politician and diplomat of Indian descent. As a member of the African National Congress (ANC) during the anti-apartheid movement, she participated in both legal activism as well as in the underground movement to end apartheid. She represented many significant figures in the movement, including South African president Nelson Mandela, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Steve Biko, Govan Mbeki, Walter Sisulu, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Jana was one of the very few South Africans who had access to political prisoners, including Mandela, in the maximum security Robben Island prison, and served as an emissary for coded messages between the political prisoners and the ANC leadership.
The 48th National Conference of the African National Congress (ANC) took place from 2 to 7 July 1991 at the University of Durban–Westville in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. It was the first national conference of the ANC since the organisation was banned by the apartheid government in 1960 and marked the ascension of Nelson Mandela to the ANC presidency, which since 1967 had been held by Oliver Tambo.
