Nonzero Records is an independent record label based in Sydney, Australia, dedicated to supporting the Sydney independent music scene and select overseas artists. [1] To date the label has produced over 50 releases for twenty artists.

Nonzero was founded by long-time music fan, Nick Carr, [2] who, inspired by labels such as Citadel, started his own label to provide Bluebottle Kiss with a label to release the band's fourth studio album, Revenge Is Slow , in March 2002. [1] [3] The album won the band new respect [4] [5] and a much larger national and international audience, [6] the album was their first overseas release in the United States [7] [8] on the In Music We Trust label and in the United Kingdom on Laughing Outaw Records. The album spawned three singles, "Gangsterland", "Hasten The Blo" and "Ounce Of Your Cruelty", with the latter also gaining release in the UK on the Sugarshack label.

Nonzero subsequently released the debut albums by The Devoted Few, Sleepless (16 September 2002) and Peabody's album, Professional Againster (30 September 2002). [1]

The label quickly expanded, primarily focused on recording and releasing local Sydney rock bands, Nonzero has also provided Australian releases for American alt.country band, Richmond Fontaine [9] and Dutch folk/rock band Big Low. [10] [11]

2006 saw the release of the Bluebottle Kiss' sixth studio album, Doubt Seeds a 20-track double CD, [12] which included extensive liner notes by Carr. [13] [14] The album received critical acclaim for the band. [15] In June 2010 Nonzero released Crow's album, Aracane, the band's first album in over twelve years. [16]

Michael Kelland John Hutchence was an Australian musician, singer-songwriter and actor. Hutchence co-founded the rock band INXS, which sold over 60 million records worldwide and was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2001. He was the lead singer and lyricist of INXS from 1977 until his death.

Something for Kate are an Australian alternative rock band, which formed in 1994 with Paul Dempsey on lead vocals and guitar, and Clint Hyndman on drums. INXS Australian rock band

INXS were an Australian rock band, formed as The Farriss Brothers in 1977 in Sydney, New South Wales. The band's founding members were bassist Garry Gary Beers, main composer and keyboardist Andrew Farriss, drummer Jon Farriss, guitarist Tim Farriss, lead singer and main lyricist Michael Hutchence, and guitarist and saxophonist Kirk Pengilly. For 20 years, INXS was fronted by Hutchence, whose magnetic stage presence made him the focal point of the band. Initially known for their new wave/pop style, the band later developed a harder pub rock style that included funk and dance elements.

Models (band)

Models are an Australian rock band formed in Melbourne in August 1978. They went into hiatus in 1988. They are often referred to as "The Models". They re-formed in 2000, 2006 and 2008 to perform reunion concerts, and began regularly performing again from 2010 onwards. "Out of Mind, Out of Sight", their only No. 1 hit, appeared on the Australian singles charts in July 1985. The related album, Out of Mind, Out of Sight, peaked at No. 3 on the Australian albums charts after its release in August. Out of Mind, Out of Sight appeared on the Billboard 200 albums chart, with the single, "Out of Mind, Out of Sight", peaking at No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. An earlier song from the same album, "Barbados", had peaked at No. 2 on the Australian singles chart.

A fifth single, "The Stairs", was only issued in the Netherlands to coincide with the release of the Live Baby Live album. It was the third consecutive INXS album produced by Chris Thomas.

Revenge is the sixteenth studio album by American rock band Kiss, released on May 19, 1992. It is the band's first album to feature current drummer Eric Singer, following the death of former drummer Eric Carr in November 1991, and is the group's last album to feature musical contributions from Carr. Marking a stylistic departure from the pop-influenced glam metal sound which characterized much of the band's 1980s output, the album reached the Top 20 in several countries, though it failed to reestablish the group back in the mainstream and its sales were equal-to or less-than its predecessors, ultimately only being certified gold by the RIAA on July 20, 1992.

American rock band Kiss has released twenty studio albums and sixty singles. The group, formed in 1973, first consisted of bassist Gene Simmons, rhythm guitarist Paul Stanley, lead guitarist Ace Frehley, and drummer Peter Criss. It is the most recognizable and successful line-up, which lasted until Criss' departure in 1980. The band is known for its make-up and on-stage antics, which influenced many artists who later used similar effects in their concerts.

Roger ODonnell

Roger O'Donnell is an English keyboardist best known for his work with The Cure. O'Donnell has also performed in The Psychedelic Furs, Thompson Twins and Berlin, as well as having an active solo career.

Peabody are an Australian four-piece rock band, formed in 1994.

Murmur was a record label that started as an imprint of Sony Music Australia in mid-1994. Named after R.E.M.'s first album, Murmur signed a number of Australia's most successful rock bands, including Silverchair, Ammonia, Something for Kate and Jebediah. Notable alumni of Murmur include John O'Donnell, a former Rolling Stone journalist who became the head of EMI Australia, and John Watson, who runs a music management company and independent record label Eleven.

Bluebottle Kiss

Bluebottle Kiss, sometimes seen as BBK, were an Australian guitar-based, indie rock band formed in 1993 by mainstay, Jamie Hutchings, on guitar and vocals. They have issued six albums, Higher Up the Firetrails (1995), Fear of Girls (1996), Patient (1999), Revenge Is Slow (2002), Come Across (2003) and Doubt Seeds (2006).

Jamie Buchanon Hutchings is the lead singer-songwriter and guitarist for Australian band Bluebottle Kiss, who have released six albums, plus numerous EPs and singles. Hutchings has released three solo albums, The Golden Coach, His Imaginary Choir and Avalon Cassettes. Unlike Bluebottle Kiss albums, which Hutchings produces himself, His Imaginary Choir was co-produced with notable Australian producer Tony Dupe. He has produced three albums for fellow Sydney band Peabody one album for Sydney mood-blues band, The Maladies and in 2013 one for Mark Moldre. His most recent solo album, Avalon Cassettes, was released on Laughing Outlaw in early 2011. Following Avalon Cassettes, he formed another band, Infinity Broke and in 2014 released a new album, River Mirrors.

Crow are an Australian rock band that is best known for three albums released in the 1990s. Founded by songwriters Peter Fenton and Peter Archer in Sydney in 1986, Crow ceased all activity in 1999, only to begin playing again in 2007. In 2009, they recorded an album of new material. Mixed by Jim Moginie, the album was released in 2010.

Pollyanna (band)

Pollyanna was an indie rock band that formed in Sydney, Australia in early 1992. The original line-up was Andrea Croft on vocals and guitar, Matt Handley on vocals and guitar, Maryke (Rayke) Stapleton on bass guitar, and Serge Luca on drums. Demo tapes were recorded in July 1992 and March 1993 but there were no official releases with this line-up. Croft left Pollyanna in June 1993 to return home to Perth, leaving the remaining members to carry on as a three piece, with Handley, reluctantly at first, taking over the lead singer and song writing duties.

Dirty Three

Dirty Three is an Australian instrumental rock band, consisting of Warren Ellis, Mick Turner and Jim White (drums), which formed in 1992. Their 1996 album Horse Stories was voted by Rolling Stone as one of the top three albums of the year. Two of their albums have peaked into the top 50 on the ARIA Albums Chart, Ocean Songs (1998) and Toward the Low Sun (2012). During their career they have spent much of their time overseas when not performing together. Turner is based in Melbourne, White lives in New York, and Ellis in Paris. Australian rock music historian Ian McFarlane described them as providing a "rumbling, dynamic sound incorporated open-ended, improvisational, electric rock ... minus the jazz-rock histrionics". In October 2010, Ocean Songs was listed in the book 100 Best Australian Albums.
