Norma Vasallo Barrueta (sometimes Norma Vasallo) is a Cuban feminist researcher and academic, and the head of the Women's Department of the University of Havana.

Education

She has a bachelor's degree in psychology, a master's degree in applied social studies, and a PhD in psychology from the University of Havana. [1]

Career

Vassallo is the head of the Women's Department of the University of Havana and a founder of its Women's Studies Group. [2] [1] At the University of Havana she leads research on the gender aspects of criminology, social sciences, and HIV/AIDS; she has been the president of the Women's Chair since 1998. [1] [3] From 1997 to 2002, she led a collaboration between the University of Havana and Carleton University in Canada. [1]

She is featured in the 2019 documentary En busca de un espacio by Marilyn Solaya [4] and appeared on the Cubavisión television program Cosas de Hombres. [5]

In 2021, she was a recipient of the 60th Anniversary seal of the Federation of Cuban Women presented by Luis Antonio Torres Iríbar and Reinaldo García Zapata. [6]

Ofelia de la Concepción Rodríguez Acosta García was a Cuban writer, journalist, radical feminist, and activist. She wrote feminist chronicles, stories, essays, novels, and a play. She is considered one of Cuba's most famous social reformers.

Camila Henríquez Ureña, was a writer, essayist, educator and literary critic from the Dominican Republic who became a naturalized Cuban citizen. She descended from a family of writers, thinkers and educators; both her parents, Francisco Henríquez y Carvajal and Salomé Ureña, as well as her brothers Pedro and Max, were literary luminaries. Gloria Angélica Careaga Pérez is a Mexican social psychologist and feminist. She has taught at the Faculty of Psychology in the National Autonomous University of Mexico since 1979. She is co-founder of Mexican organization El Closet de Sor Juana and former co-Secretary General of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association.

María Ángeles Durán Heras is a Spanish sociologist best known for being a pioneer in research on unpaid work, the social situation of women and their social and work environment, health economics, and inequality in the use of time. She was the first woman to attain a chair of sociology in Spain, in 1982. She was one of the first researchers in her field who carried out works with a feminist perspective in the Spanish academic world. In 1979, she was the founder and director of the Women's Studies Seminar of the Autonomous University of Madrid, the first university institute for women's studies created in Spain. In 2002 she received the Pascual Madoz National Research Award in Economic and Legal Sciences. Carmen Diana Deere is an American feminist economist who is an expert on land policy and agrarian reform, rural social movements, and gender in Latin American development. She has conducted extensive research on access to land, economic autonomy of rural women, and property rights in Latin America. Deere's research and work, often carried out with Magdalena León de Leal, have contributed to promoting the changes that have taken place since 1980 in the vast majority of countries in Latin America with respect to the reform of land laws, civil codes, and family matters, as well as the approval of new legislation that recognizes the equal rights of women and men, including their property rights. Deere is Professor Emeritus of Latin American studies and Food Resources Economics at the University of Florida and Professor Emeritus of FLACSO-Ecuador. She was honored with the Silvert Award in 2018.

Florence Thomas is a French-Colombian social psychologist and feminist academic. She was a co-founder of the Programa de Estudios de Género, Mujer y Desarrollo at the National University of Colombia. She is also a journalist for the newspaper El Tiempo. Thomas was honored with the Premio Nacional de Periodismo Simón Bolívar in 2005. In 2017, Thomas was decorated as a Knight in France's Legion of Honour.
