The North Central Unit is a prison located in Calico Rock, Arkansas. It is managed by the Arkansas Department of Corrections.
The North Central Unit, sometimes known as the Calico Rock Prison, was founded as a way to bring jobs to the area and to build a prison facility in the northern part of the state. [1] At the time of its founding, local residents protested against the facility being built. [1]
In 2010, the prison expanded to house an additional 100 beds. [2]

The Arkansas Department of Corrections (ADC). formerly the Arkansas Department of Correction, is the state law enforcement agency that oversees inmates and operates state prisons within the U.S. state of Arkansas. ADC consists of two divisions, the Division of Corrections (DOC) and the Division of Community Corrections (DCC), as well as the Arkansas Correctional School District. DOC is responsible for housing and rehabilitating people convicted of crimes by the courts of Arkansas. DOC maintains 20 prison facilities for inmates in 12 counties. DCC is responsible for adult parole and probation and offender reentry.

The supermax and non-supermax facilities are separate from one another.

Terrell Don Hutto, known as T. Don Hutto, was an American businessman and one of the three co-founders of Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), whose establishment marked the beginning of the private prison industry during the era of former President Ronald Reagan. In 1983, Hutto, Robert Crants and Tom Beasley formed CCA and received investments from Jack C. Massey, the founder of Hospital Corporation of America, Vanderbilt University, and the Tennessee Valley Authority. The T. Don Hutto Residential Center, one of CCA's detention centers, was named after him.
