Cathal Brugha FET North Strand Campus (formerly Marino College of Further Education) is situated in what was formerly known as Connolly House on the North Strand, Dublin. The Building was designed and built by Gleeson Byrne Whelan in 1971, and is of Brutalist Design. [1]
The campus was rebranded North Strand FET Campus, a constituent campus of Cathal Brugha FET College, in March 2023. [2] It was formerly the site of North Strand Technical College, before that school moved to Larkin Community College, [3] on Champions Avenue. Marino College then took residence in the building from the year 2000. [4]
The college is part of the City of Dublin Education Training Board (ETB) (formerly City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee (VEC). Prior to being Cathal Brugha FET College North Strand Campus, Marino College — and by extension Marino College of Further Education was one of the first educational establishments in Ireland to offer Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) vocational programmes. [5]
The college has a strong history of delivering vocational education and training. Its innovative pre-nursing course dates from the early 1980's. The college was one of four chosen to deliver the pilot programme Certificate in Early Learning and Care in 2021. It runs a number of skills to advance courses in areas such as Digital Marketing and International Management and Leadership.
The courses are certified by a number of bodies including Quality and Qualification Ireland (QQI) (previously known as FETAC and NCVA), City and Guilds, ITEC as well as other professional training awards.
The college operates a number of Faculties, not limited to Health, Dental, Nursing, Back to Education Initiative (BTEI), Childcare, Business, Office Administration, Beauty, Animal Science, Computer Networks, and Fashion Styling and Creative Studies. [6] The college runs a number of Apprenticeships, [7] Traineeships, and Skills to advance [8] courses.
In March 2022, it was confirmed that Marino CFE and Killester CFE would consolidate services, and take lease of the former TU Dublin site on Cathal Brugha St/Marlborough St, announced by Minister of Education Norma Foley, and Minister of Higher and Further Education Simon Harris, [9] as part of the Strategic plan for a strategic response to education provision in North Dublin city by optimising the use of existing properties. Part of this was the announcement that Killester College Campus would become the permanent site of Killester Raheny Clontarf Educate Together National School. [10]
After this announcement the "One College, Three Campuses" was promoted on social media and distributed to students. Business, Tourism, and Culture and Heritage would relocate to Marlborough Street, Science, Animal Science, [11] Networks would remain in Killester, and some courses would move to North Strand Campus, namely Pre Emergency Services, Classroom Assistant among others.
The North Strand Campus was rebranded in March 2023 from Marino College of Further Education, and with the conversion of the Killester Campus to the ETNS, all courses from the former Killester Campus will be located between North Strand and Marlborough Street.
In May 2019, Sabina Higgins (wife of President Higgins) attended the College's annual graduation ceremony in Croke Park. [12] [13]
The college runs the successful City of Dublin ETB Sports and Cultural Council annual [14] Zombie Run, prior to Halloween every year. It is a highlight of the college calendar.
The college holds an annual exhibition/Celebration of creative department student work.
The College has a long association with the Five Lamp's Arts Festival, [15] which was founded by former teacher Roisin Lonergan. [16]
The Northside is the part of Dublin city that lies to the north of the River Liffey. It is an informal but commonly used term. While it is sometimes regarded as less wealthy than the city's Southside, the Northside was originally the home of the city's upper classes and the more privileged of the two. Today, some of the wealthiest areas in Ireland lie north of the river, such as Malahide, Howth, Clontarf, and Castleknock.
Dublin Institute of Technology was a major third-level institution in Dublin, Ireland. On 1 January 2019 DIT was dissolved and its functions were transferred to the Technological University Dublin, as TU Dublin City Campus. The institution began with the establishment of the first technical education institution in Ireland, in 1887, and progressed through various legal and governance models, culminating in autonomy under a statute of 1992.
Third-level education in the Republic of Ireland includes all education after second-level, encompassing higher education in universities and colleges and further education on Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) and other courses. The degree-awarding institutions which can grant awards at all academic levels are the University of Dublin, National University of Ireland, University of Limerick, Dublin City University, Technological University Dublin, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Munster Technological University and Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest, as well as St. Patrick's College, Maynooth. Quality and Qualifications Ireland, a State agency, can grant awards in other institutions directly, or delegate the authority to do so. The King's Inns of Dublin has a limited role in education specialising in the preparation of candidates for the degree of barrister-at-law to practice as barristers. Medical schools in Ireland also have particular regulation. There were seven establishments of higher education within Ireland ranked among the top 500 universities worldwide by the Times Higher Education Supplement in 2008.
Raheny is a northern suburb of Dublin, Ireland, halfway from the city centre to Howth. It is centred on a historic settlement, first documented in 570 AD. The district shares Dublin's two largest municipal parks, Saint Anne's Park and Bull Island with its 4.5 km beach, with neighbouring Clontarf, and is crossed by several small watercourses.
A Vocational Education Committee (VEC) was a statutory local education body in Ireland that administered some secondary education, most adult education and a very small amount of primary education in the state. Before 1992 VECs had authority over the Dublin Institute of Technology and the Regional Technical Colleges. They existed from 1930 to 2013, when they were replaced by Education and Training Boards.
Clontarf is an affluent coastal suburb on the Northside of Dublin in the city's Dublin 3 postal district. Historically, there were two centres of population, one on the coast towards the city, and the fishing village of Clontarf Sheds, further north on the coast at what is now Vernon Avenue. Clontarf has a range of retail businesses in several locations, mainly centred on Vernon Avenue. It adjoins Fairview, Marino, Killester and Raheny. Clontarf is in the jurisdiction of Dublin City Council.
Killester is a small residential suburb of Dublin, Ireland on the Northside of the city in the Dublin 3 and Dublin 5 postal districts. It was the site of a church and convent or monastery centuries ago, and later a small village developed. In 1922, a settlement for ex-servicemen and their families was established, and the area grew with suburban housing later. The local parish church has for many years hosted a relic of St Brigid.

Blackrock Further Education Institute is a college of further education in Dublin which was established in 1982. In 2014 it moved to Blackrock in a redeveloped Town Hall, Technical College and Carnegie Library. It provides both higher educational qualifications as well as technical/vocational education and training in areas including Beauty Therapy, Creative Multimedia, Marketing, Auctioneering and Estate Agency Practice, Accountancy and Design. Blackrock Further Education Institute is located in Blackrock, 17 kilometres (11 mi) from Dublin City Centre.

Post-Leaving Certificate (PLC) courses are a set of courses and qualifications run in Ireland for students who have finished their secondary education. The term refers to post-secondary education courses which are not found within the higher education sector, but the further education sector in Ireland. The majority of students who enrol on a PLC course are under 23, but mature students are also welcome, and increasingly enrolling on such courses. A Post-Leaving Certificate course is taken after a student has passed their Leaving Certificate, and is generally between one and two years in duration. PLC courses are aimed primarily at students who would like to develop vocational or technological skills in order to enter an occupation, or progress to higher education.

The Colaiste Ide College of Further Education is a coeducational, nondenominational centre of education funded and managed by the City of Dublin Education and Training Board to provide a Further Education service to the community of Finglas in Dublin North-West. It seeks to provide a school of excellence in which each individual student and staff member may reach his or her potential in a welcoming, supportive and safe environment.
Plunket College of Further Education is a school in Whitehall, Dublin, established in 1967. Originally it was a vocational secondary school for boys, with preparation for the Group, Intermediate and Leaving Certificate, it has developed into a co-educational school focusing on the senior cycle and developing more post-leaving certificate courses in recent years. It is run by the City of Dublin Education and Training Board which replaced the Vocational Education Committee.
