The North Texas State Hospital (NTSH) is a trio of inpatient mental health facilities owned by the State of Texas and operated by the Texas Health and Human Service Commission's Health and Specialty Care System division. [1] NTSH has three campuses, one in Wichita Falls and two in Vernon.
The Wichita Falls campus is a 330-bed facility that exists to treat people with mental illnesses and mental retardation after being screened by a local mental health facility (generally, a hospital or community mental health/mental retardation facility). It is Medicare certified. Although not a maximum security facility, the campus is guarded, and buildings (which are not guarded) are constantly locked with very limited access.[ citation needed ]The facility used to be open until a few years ago before the merge with formally Vernon State Hospital. Wichita Falls State Hospital was the name since 1922 and Vernon was added as an annex in the 1960s. Since the merge and the approx. $100,000 name change the hospital has become much more restricted and is no longer an open campus.
In 2023, the 88th Texas Legislature set aside $425 million for the construction of a replacement hospital building that will be built behind the existing aged facilities, with construction to start summer 2024. [2] The new facility will have 200 beds: 24 maximum-security, 136 non-maximum-security, 24 adolescent and 16 civil. Construction is estimated for completion in fall 2027. The plans for the existing hospital facilities are still being discussed. [3]
The Vernon campus has 262 adult beds and 32 adolescent beds. It is a maximum-security facility that services adults with criminal (forensic) issues.

In January 2018 the NTSH re-opened the Victory Field location [5] [6] to house adolescents with dually-diagnosed substance abuse and mental health problems. Many of the clients are admitted as a condition of their probation, having had significant involvement with the juvenile justice system.

Bryce Hospital opened in 1861 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States. It is Alabama's oldest and largest inpatient psychiatric facility. First known as the Alabama State Hospital for the Insane and later as the Alabama Insane Hospital, the building is considered an architectural model. The hospital houses 268 beds for acute care, treatment and rehabilitation of full-time (committed) patients. The Mary Starke Harper Geriatric Psychiatry Hospital, a separate facility on the same campus, provides an additional 100 beds for inpatient geriatric care. The main facility was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

Townsville University Hospital (TUH), formerly TheTownsville Hospital (TTH), is a public tertiary care hospital on Angus Smith Drive, Douglas, Townsville, Queensland, Australia. It is the largest facility within the Townsville Hospital and Health Service (HHS) geographic area. TUH is the major trauma centre for northern Queensland and all medical and surgical specialties are represented. Florida State Hospital (FSH) is a hospital and psychiatric hospital in Chattahoochee, Florida. Established in 1876, it was Florida's only state mental institution until 1947. It currently has a capacity of 1,042 patients. The hospital's current Administration Building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The South Carolina State Hospital was a publicly funded state-run psychiatric hospital in Columbia, South Carolina. Founded in 1821 as the South Carolina Lunatic Asylum, it was one of the first public mental hospitals established in the United States. The Mills Building, its first building, was designed by early American architect Robert Mills, and is a National Historic Landmark. The hospital had more than 1,000 patients in 1900, but with the transition of mental health facilities to community settings, it closed in the late 1990s. While buildings on the campus were temporarily used for inpatient services into the early 2000s, they were not part of the State Hospital, but other inpatient facilities of the agency. Several buildings on its campus housed offices and storage facilities of the state's Department of Mental Health until approximately 2014. In October 2014, the Department sold the first parcels of the property into private ownership and received the first sale proceeds. The William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute remained on the campus until 2015, when it moved to a new facility on Department's Northeast Columbia Campus. As of January 2021, 100% of the South Carolina State Hospital property had been transferred to private ownership. Proceeds from the sale of the Bull Street property must be used to benefit patients of the Agency. As of August 2020, the SC Mental Health Commission had authorized the expenditure of $10 million of the proceeds, $6.5 million, for the development of additional community housing for patients.
Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento (SMCS) is a medical center in Sacramento, California, that has been named one of the Top 100 Hospitals in the US for five years, including 2013–2015. It is owned and operated by Sutter Health, a Northern California not-for-profit health system. The center offers both community-based and tertiary medical services. In 2015, the center consolidated its Sutter Memorial Hospital campus in East Sacramento with its midtown Sutter General Hospital location, with the opening of the Anderson Lucchetti Women's and Children's Center and the complete remodeling of Sutter General Hospital into the Ose Adams Medical Pavilion. The midtown location is where Sutter Health's first hospital, Sutter Hospital, opened in 1923. The center also includes Sutter Center for Psychiatry, providing psychiatric, mental health and chemical dependency services since 1958.
The Elgin Mental Health Center is a mental health facility operated by the State of Illinois in Elgin, Illinois. Throughout its history, Elgin's mission has changed. At times, it treated mental illness, tuberculosis, and provided federally funded care for veterans. The hospital's site, which included a patient-staffed farm reached a maximum of 1,139 acres (461 ha) after World War II. Its maximum population was reached in the mid 1950s with 7,700 patients. Between 1993 and 2008, most of the older buildings in the complex were demolished due to being in poor condition as the result of being abandoned for decades. The site is/was popular among teens and in the paranormal world due to its claims of hauntings in the older buildings and the hospital's cemetery.
