Established in 2003, the Castle Hill RSL North West Wind Ensemble is an Australian community wind band.

Formed by graduated members of the Castle Hill RSL Youth Wind Orchestra who wished to continue playing music of the highest standard, NWWE attracts musicians from across Sydney to its base in the North West.

2011 Australian national competition

Over the 2011 Easter weekend the band travelled to Adelaide, South Australia for the National Band Championships to perform in the Open A Grade competition. Performing a program of works by Grainger, de Meij, Sparke and Sousa they scored 489 from a total of 500 points [1] to win the championship for the third time in five attempts.

Although much of his work was experimental and unusual, the piece with which he is most generally associated is his piano arrangement of the folk-dance tune "Country Gardens".

Johannes Abraham (Johan) de Meij, born November 23, 1953, in Voorburg, Netherlands, is a Dutch conductor, trombonist, and composer, best known for his Symphony No. 1, nicknamed The Lord of the Rings symphony.

2012 Australian national competition

On 8 April 2012, the band competed in Open A Grade at the National Championships held in Melbourne. Performing works by Frank Ticheli, Graham Lloyd, Philip Sparke and Julius Fučík they scored 493 of a possible 500 points, [2] the highest of any wind band in history to retain the Prime Minister's Trophy.

Frank Ticheli American composer

Frank Ticheli is an American composer of orchestral, choral, chamber, and concert band works. He lives in Los Angeles, California, where he is a Professor of Composition at the University of Southern California. He was the Pacific Symphony's composer-in-residence from 1991 to 1998, composing numerous works for that orchestra. A number of his works are particularly notable, as they have become standards in concert band repertoire.

Philip Allen Sparke is an English composer and musician born in London, noted for his concert band and brass band music. Children Ben Sparkle (14.02.2001) His early major works include The Land of the Long White Cloud- "Aotearoa" - written for the 1980 Centennial New Zealand Brass Band championship. He subsequently went on to win the EBU New Music for Band Competition three times, including in 1986 with a commission from the BBC called Orient Express,

The National Band Council of Australia (NBCA) is the national association representing the interests of brass and concert bands in Australia. The NBCA is dedicated to promoting and developing the banding movement throughout Australia. The Council is also responsible for the operation of national band contests, marching contests and solo and party competitions.

Alan Lourens is a classical musician, composer, euphonium player and conductor from Perth, Western Australia. He is the head of the UWA Conservatorium of Music, a position to which he was appointed in 2012, and reappointed in 2016. He was also appointed as a full Professor of Music in 2016. Lourens holds Doctor of Music (1999), Master of Music (1992) and Performance Certificate (1992) qualifications from Indiana University, where he studied Wind Conducting and Euphonium Performance. He also holds a Bachelor of Education from the WA College of Advanced Education. Previously he has held positions in Singapore, Dubai and WAAPA. His name was also associated with a possible appointment as Head of the ANU School of Music. In 2009, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA).
