Northeast Grocery is the parent company of Tops Friendly Markets, Price Chopper and Market 32. [1] The company was formed after a merger in 2021 which gives the company nearly 300 stores in the northeast United States. [2] [3]
On February 8, 2021, Price Chopper and Tops announced plans to merge. [4] The new parent company would be headquartered in Schenectady, New York. The Price Chopper and Tops businesses will retain main offices in Schenectady and Williamsville respectively and will continue to be managed locally by their respective leaders. [5]
Nine months later, the merger was completed. The stores are now owned and overseen by Northeast Grocery. The President and CEO of Price Chopper, Scott Grimmett, stayed on to manage the merger before retiring in February 2022, with Tops Friendly Markets CEO Frank Curci taking over after that. [6] The FTC required the combined company to divest from 12 of the combined companies’ stores. [7] Those stores were sold to C&S Wholesale Grocers with most given the Grand Union name. [8]

Tops Friendly Markets is an American supermarket chain based in Amherst, New York, that operates stores in Upstate New York, Vermont, and Northern Pennsylvania. The chain operates full-scale supermarkets. Tops is a subsidiary of Northeast Grocery, which also owns the Price Chopper and Market 32 supermarkets based in Schenectady, New York. As of August 2022, the company operated 149 stores and 5 gas station/convenience stores. The chain formerly operated stores in Ohio and Massachusetts.
The Penn Traffic Company was founded in 1854 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, United States, as a food service company for stagecoaches. It eventually became a general-merchandise department store but by the early 1960s had also returned to the food business through the acquisition of Super Value Corporation, operator of the 10-store Riverside supermarket chain. Grand Union Supermarkets, later known as Grand Union Family Markets and often referred to simply as Grand Union, is an American chain of grocery stores that does business in upstate New York and Vermont, and used to do business throughout most of the northeastern United States. It operated stores in other areas of the country including the midwestern and southeastern states, and internationally in the Caribbean and Canada. The company was founded and headquartered in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and moved to Brooklyn, New York, in the early 20th century. Grand Union moved again to Elmwood Park, New Jersey and finally to Wayne, New Jersey before the company was forced into Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2001 and sold to C&S Wholesale Grocers.

The chain was operated as an affiliate of C&S. Southern Family Markets had operated a varying number of supermarkets and 10 liquor stores under the banners Southern Family Markets, Piggly Wiggly, Bruno's, and Food World. The liquor stores, all located along the gulf coast, were called SFM Liquors.
FreshCo Ltd. is a Canadian chain of deep discount supermarkets owned by Sobeys. It was launched in March 2010. As of September 2023, there were 100 FreshCo stores.
Food 4 Less is the name of several grocery store chains, the largest of which is currently owned by Kroger. It is a no-frills grocery store where the customers bag their own groceries at the checkout. Kroger operates Food 4 Less stores in the Chicago metropolitan area and in Southern California. Kroger operates their stores as Foods Co. in northern and central California, including Bakersfield and the Central Coast, because they do not have the rights to the Food 4 Less name in those areas. Other states, such as Nevada, formerly contained Kroger-owned Food 4 Less stores.
