The Norwegian Society for the Conservation of Nature (Norwegian : Norges Naturvernforbund, NNV), also known as Friends of the Earth Norway, is one of the largest Norwegian environmental organisations with approximately 24,000 members. The organisation is based on a volunteer work among the members, constituting work both at local and national levels. Norges Naturvernforbund works within a large range of environmental areas. The organisation is affiliated with Friends of the Earth, and member of INFORSE-Europe.

Contents

History

The society dates back to 1914 as the National Association for Natural Conservation (Landsforeningen for Naturfredning). In 1916 the association started its work after three regional chapters had been founded, and the first Chairman was Hjalmar Broch. The society changed its name in 1936 to the Landsforeningen for Naturfredning i Norge, and again in 1951 to Landsforbundet for naturvern i Norge. Its current name is from 1962. The first issue of the membership magazine Norsk Natur was published in 1965 and two years later Nature and Youth (Natur og Ungdom) was founded as the youth branch.
International activities include an educational project in 16 countries on sustainable energy and practical energy saving measures SPARE, which is also part of the INFORSE-Europe cooperation school activities. The SPARE activities started in eastern European countries in 1996-99, and became introduced in the previous Soviet Union countries since 2005, where it is spread in 7000 schools (2008).

Friends of the Earth

The Norwegian Society for the Conservation of Nature is part of the 30 national organisations that constitute Friends of the Earth Europe .

Organisation

The organisation has 18 county branches and 155 local groups throughout the country. In addition it has the youth branch Nature and Youth (Natur og Ungdom) and the children's branch Eco-detectives (Miljøagentene).

Their head office is located in Oslo. In total the environmental organisation has about 28 employees, some working in county offices throughout the country. Norges Naturvernforbund publishes the magazine Natur & miljø, and previously published the news bulletin Miljøjournalen.

The main policy areas for the organisation are climate change and nature conservation. Also, the organisation is concerned with preserving coastal nature habitats and increasing energy efficiency in buildings.

The organisation has a large foreign NGO branch, which mainly runs projects on energy saving and environmental education. Most of these projects are located in Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and West Africa.

Silje Lundberg has been the organisation's leader since 2016, and Maren Aschehoug Esmark has been CEO since 2012.

Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND) is a German non-governmental organisation (NGO) dedicated to preserving nature and protecting the environment. The name means "German Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation". Its subtitle Friends of the Earth Germany indicates that BUND is a member organisation of the international network Friends of the Earth (FoE).

Friends of Nature is an international movement with a background in the Social Democratic movement, which aims to make the enjoyment of nature accessible to the wider community by providing appropriate recreational and travel facilities.

Bård Lahn

Bård Lappegård Lahn is a Norwegian environmentalist and writer. He is a researcher at CICERO Center for international climate research in Oslo, with a research focus on climate politics, sociology, and Science and Technology Studies. He has previously worked as an adviser on international climate policy in the Norwegian Society for the Conservation of Nature, and from 2006 to 2008 he was chairman of the environmental NGO Natur og Ungdom. Prior to his leadership he had been deputy chairman since 2003 and an active member of Natur og Ungdom since the mid-1990s.

Lars Haltbrekken

Lars Haltbrekken is a Norwegian environmentalist and was elected to the Parliament of Norway in 2017 for the Socialist Left Party (Norway). He was chairman of Friends of the Earth Norway from 2005 to 2016 after having been deputy chairman from 2003 to 2005. Haltbrekken was also chairman of Natur og Ungdom in 1995 and 1996. In between the two leaderships he worked primarily trying to prevent natural gas power plants in Norway, and was chairman of Fellesaksjonen mot gasskraftverk. He grew up in Trondheim.

Putsj is a magazine affiliated with the Norwegian environmental organisation Natur og Ungdom. The magazine was started in 2000. It is a youth magazine writing about topics related to youth, activism, culture and environmentalism. The headquarters of the magazine is in Oslo.

Trillemarka

Trillemarka is a 147 km2 (57 sq mi) nature reserve located in Buskerud, Norway. It was created on December 13, 2002 and is located in the hill- and mountain areas between Nore in Numedal and Solevann in Sigdal, partially in the municipalities of Sigdal, Nore og Uvdal, and Rollag. The nature reserve consists of one of the largest natural forest areas in central Østlandet and includes virgin forest and 93 red list species.

Fellesaksjonen mot gasskraftverk is a former environmental organisation that functioned as a binding between various NGOs who were opposed to the construction of fossile gas thermal power plants in Norway. It was created in all secrecy in 1997 and was able to collect about 3,000 people willing to use civil disobedience to hinder the construction, before going public to announce this resistance. The organization was disestablished in 2002.

SustainableEnergy (VedvarendeEnergi) which was called Danish Organisation for Renewable Energy (OVE) until 2010, is a non-governmental, non-profit, membership based association. SustainableEnergy was founded in 1975 based on a popular movement for renewable energy in Denmark with close relationship to the anti-nuclear movement (OOA), which had an immense popular backup.

Silje Lundberg

Silje Ask Lundberg is a Norwegian environmentalist and chairman of Norwegian Society for the Conservation of Nature. She is a former leader of Nature and Youth. She grew up in Harstad in Northern Norway. Prior to her leadership she has been deputy chairman and been working for other environmental organisations, such as ZERO and Bellona Foundation.

The Danish Outdoor Council is a non-governmental umbrella organisation for organisations active in the promotion of outdoor, recreational activities as well as nature protection interests in Denmark. It was founded on 27 November 1942 and now has 94 member organisations.

Ingrid Skjoldvær

Ingrid Skjoldvær is a Norwegian environmentalist and a former chairperson of the environmental organisation Nature and Youth. She comes from Sortland in Vesterålen and has held several positions in the organisation, most recently as deputy chairman, before she was elected as head of the organisation on 10 January 2016, a position she held until 2017.
