Not One Light Red: A Modified Document is a compilation album created by Scott Tennent (formerly of Half Visconte and then the current manager of Modified Arts) and David Jensen (formerly of Before Braille) to serve 3 essential missions. Its first mission was to create a record that would showcase and introduce local Phoenix bands to the rest of the United States. [1] Second, it was supposed to serve to help promote the local Phoenix music and art venue, The Modified (also known as Modified Arts). [2] Finally, it was to serve as a springboard for a national independent record label based in the Phoenix area along the same lines as Kill Rock Stars in Olympia, Washington and Dischord Records in Washington, D.C. [1]
Half Visconte was an Indie rock band from Tempe, Arizona fronted by Scott Tennent and Rich Minardi. Scott was owner and operator of the now-defunct label, This Argonaut Records, and the former manager of the Phoenix indie/art rock-music venue Modified Arts. At that time Mike Wright, original drummer, also owned The Argo which was a warehouse venue designed to support touring bands by the collection of donations and support of volunteer work offered by the local underground music community.
Modified Arts is an art gallery, music and performance space in Downtown Phoenix, AZ. The gallery is part of the Roosevelt Row Arts District. Owner Kimber Lanning opened Modified Arts in 1999 as a live music and performance space. Musicians such as Kristin Hersh, Arcade Fire, and Why? performed there. In 2010, Kim Larkin and Adam Murray took over Modified Arts as Director and Associate Director, respectively. At that time the focus of gallery changed to more visual and performance art with fewer bands and musicians. In 2010, Larkin and Murray stepped down from running the gallery. In Dec. 2011, Curator/Artist Jeff Chabot took over as Director & Curator of Modified Arts. Chabot's focus has been on exhibiting contemporary art such as photography, installation, printmaking, sculpture, drawing, painting, video, and mixed media.
Before Braille is an independent rock band from Mesa, Arizona known for its DIY work ethic and as a pioneer of Arizona's emo-core movement, or as they liked to call it, "480-area-core," during the early 2000s.
Notable tracks on the record include:
Jimmy Eat World is an American rock band formed in Mesa, Arizona in 1993. The band is composed of lead guitarist/lead vocalist Jim Adkins, drummer Zach Lind, rhythm guitarist/vocalist Tom Linton, and bassist Rick Burch. As of October 2016, Jimmy Eat World has released nine studio albums, the last eight featuring the current lineup.
Seven Storey Mountain is an American rock group from Phoenix, Arizona. The group's music is heavily influenced by the early Washington, D.C. post-hardcore scene.
Deep Elm Records is an independent record label releasing albums by bands such as Lights & Motion, The Appleseed Cast, Brandtson, The White Octave, and Planes Mistaken for Stars. It has released a number of compilation album, such as The Emo Diaries.
The art for the album also reflects its desire to promote the Phoenix-based artists showcased at The Modified. Its cover art is a painting called "The Swimmer" by Sergio Aguirre, [1] [2] [4] and the rest of the packaging features paintings and illustrations by Brent Bond, Jill Betterly, and Lisa Williamson. [1] [2]
Three years later, Sunset Alliance worked to continue this series by releasing Not One Light Red: A Desert Extended [5] This record would hope to extend interest in Phoenix bands by also including some national and international favorites such as Cursive and Kristofer Astrom.
Cursive is an American indie rock band from Omaha, Nebraska, on 15 Passenger Records, Saddle Creek Records, and Big Scary Monsters (UK). Described as emo-tinged post-hardcore, Cursive came to prominence with 2000's Domestica and found commercial and critical success with 2003's The Ugly Organ. The band has released eight studio albums, a compilations album, and a mix of singles and EPs since 1997.

This record comes at an interesting time for each of the bands, as Fivespeed had just opened for Jimmy Eat World at the release of Bleed American, Before Braille was preparing to enter the studio to start recording its full-length album, and Andherson had a "homecoming" of sorts in the Phoenix metro-area with this release, after having relocated to Berkeley, California.
