The history of the family started in the Egerland, with castles in Wildstein (now Skalná), Falkenau (now Sokolov) and Thierstein at the end of the 12th century. Up to the 18th century three lines existed, named by the most important castles, Wernberg, Weißenstein near Friedenfels and Bodenstein near Nittenau. The family is directly related with the House of Sparneck. It became Freiherren. A prominent member of the family is Cajetan Anton von Notthaft. The last male descendant died in 1952.
Beginning with the 14th century there was a Swabian family in the region of Remseck, carrying a different coat of arms. Though there is no familiar link found, the two families are regarded to be related.

It is now privately owned, and not open for visitors.

The County of Eberstein was a territory within the Holy Roman Empire, situated in the southwest of modern Germany. From 1085 up into the 13th century, the Counts of Eberstein lived in the castle known today as Alt Eberstein which lies on a mountain top between the valleys of the rivers Murg and Oos. They then moved to Neu Eberstein, today known as Schloss Eberstein, near Gernsbach.

Burg Kreuzenstein is a castle near Leobendorf in Lower Austria, Austria. Burg Kreuzenstein is 265 metres (869 ft) above sea level. It was constructed on the remains of a medieval castle that had fallen into disrepair and was then demolished during the Thirty Years' War. Intended to be a family vault for the Wilczek family, it was rebuilt in the 19th century by Count Nepomuk Wilczek with money from the family's large Silesian coal mines. Kreuzenstein is interesting in that it was constructed out of sections of medieval structures purchased by the family from all over Europe to form an authentic-looking castle. Thus, the castle can be considered both a 'neo-' and 'original' medieval structure. The castle is sometimes used as a location for films.
Lielstraupe Castle is a castle in Straupe Parish, Cēsis Municipality, in the Vidzeme region of Latvia. It was originally built in the 13th century, and the village of Straupe began to develop around the castle in the 14th century. A large tower was added around 1600. Severely damaged by fire in 1905, the castle was restored between 1906 and 1909 by architect Vilhelms Bokslafs. Between 1963 and 2018 it housed a drug addiction rehabilitation hospital.

Cajetan Anton Freiherr Notthafft von Weißenstein was a member of the House of Notthafft in the line named by Wernberg. From 1732 to 1752 he was Prince-Provost of Berchtesgaden in Bavaria.
Dolenji Boštanj is a settlement in the Municipality of Sevnica in central Slovenia. It lies near the confluence of the Mirna River with the Sava in Lower Carniola. The municipality is now included in the Lower Sava Statistical Region. The rail line from Sevnica to Trebnje runs through the settlement and has a station there.
