The Nottingham Society of Artists is an art society in the city of Nottingham, England. It was founded in 1880. [1]
The society is located at 71–73 Friar Lane, [2] near Nottingham Castle and adjacent to the Friar Lane Gallery. [3] [4] The Nottingham-based painter Arthur Spooner (1873–1962) was formerly a member of the society. [5]

Greyfriars, Leicester, was a friary of the Order of Friars Minor, commonly known as the Franciscans, established on the west side of Leicester by 1250, and dissolved in 1538. Following dissolution the friary was demolished and the site levelled, subdivided, and developed over the following centuries. The locality has retained the name Greyfriars particularly in the streets named "Grey Friars", and the older "Friar Lane".

John Richard Townsend FRSA was a painter who was born in Nottingham. His father was Art Director at Thomas Forman & Sons printers. Townsend left school aged 14 and studied art at Nottingham School of Art. He was taught by the Nottinghamshire painter Arthur Spooner. During the 1950s and 1960s, Townsend was commissioned internationally for oil painting portraits of celebrities and members of the aristocracy.
