Network-attached storage removes the responsibility of file serving from other servers on the network. They typically provide access to files using network file sharing protocols such as NFS, SMB, or AFP. From the mid-1990s, NAS devices began gaining popularity as a convenient method of sharing files among multiple computers. Potential benefits of dedicated network-attached storage, compared to general-purpose servers also serving files, include faster data access, easier administration, and simple configuration.

PlateSpin is a software suite of Micro Focus International. Originally a standalone software company headquartered in Toronto, Canada, registered in Delaware, US as Platespin Inc. and founded by Robert Reive in 1999 with co-founders added later David Richards, Bruno Baloi and M. Verdun. Intel corp. via the Intel64fund was a key investor, along with 4Quarters Capital, Castlehill Ventures(Barry Laver) and AltaMira, the latter three all of Toronto, Canada. The original product for which the patent was filed was the Platespin Operations Center, the first usable VM provisioning tool for low cost deployment of servers in their VMs to Vmware ESX and GSX on 64bit processors. Platespin Operations Centre was designed to reduce operations cost and more efficiently use the resources of large servers, as well as deal with routine security patches to software servers and their OS efficiently. Today Platespin is a NetIQ suite of software that helps manage physical and virtualized server workloads on VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V, KVM, Citrix XenServer, Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.
BorderManager is a multi purpose network security application developed by Novell, Inc. BorderManager is designed as a proxy server, firewall, and VPN access point. Novell has announced that migration to SuperLumin 4.0 Proxy Cache is "Novell's preferred firewall and proxy solution for NetWare customers upgrading to Novell Open Enterprise Server on Linux."
Proginet Corporation, which was acquired by Tibco Software in 2010, was a systems management software company. It is best known for having developed a breakthrough product in the late 1980s called XCOM, which allowed companies to manage the process of moving bulk data between 26 different computer operating systems. In the early 1990s, the company's rights in XCOM were sold to its distributor, which was itself later acquired by CA-Inc. XCOM went on to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in sales for CA-Inc. After the sale of its only product, the company secured equity stakes from Microsoft and Novell, and began the development of enterprise managed file transfer products across many major computing platforms including Windows, UNIX, Linux, AS/400 and the mainframe. The company has been in business since 1986. Proginet's products include CyberFusion Integration Suite, Slingshot, Edge Server, Harbor NSM and HFT, and the Rocketstream software suite. Proginet's global customer base spans more than 23 countries and includes many Fortune 500 companies. The company is headquartered in Garden City, New York, has offices in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. On June 22, 2010 the company announced that it is to be acquired by TIBCO Corporation for $23 million.

Novell File Reporter is software that allows network administrators to identify files stored on the network and generates reports regarding the size of individual files, file type, when files were last accessed, and where duplicates exist. Additionally, the File Reporter tracks storage volume capacity and usage. It is a component of the Novell File Management Suite.
Virtual Storage Platform is the brand name for a Hitachi Data Systems line of computer data storage systems for data centers. Model numbers include G200, G400, G600, G800, G1000, and G1500.
Micro Focus ZENworks, a suite of software products developed and maintained by Micro Focus International for computer systems management, aims to manage the entire life cycle of servers, of desktop PCs, of laptops, and of handheld devices such as Android and iOS Mobile Phones and Tablets. As of 2011 Novell planned to include full disk encryption functionality within ZENworks. ZENworks supports multiple server platforms and multiple directory services.
GroupWise is a messaging and collaboration platform from Micro Focus that supports email, calendaring, personal information management, instant messaging, and document management. The GroupWise platform consists of desktop client software, which is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, and the server software, which is supported on Windows Server and Linux.
Blackbird Group, Inc. was an Enterprise software company headquartered in New York City, New York which developed, marketed and supported software that helped companies and organizations with large-scale, Windows-centric networks manage and audit Active Directory, Windows File System, Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft SQL Server environments. Its products were used by organizations to manage both regulatory and corporate Compliance, as well as Data Protection requirements. At the end of 2012, Blackbird Group was acquired by enterprise security solution software vendor BeyondTrust.
